Hi people can anybody answer this for me.
I have just replaced my thermostat because it was taking ages to reach normal running temperature and when it did get there anything over 70mph would put it back on the base line. With the new thermostat fitted it is reaching running temp quicker but I still have the same problem, is this normal on a import? I had a uk car before and it stayed at the same point on the gauge all the time.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
Bryan

I think all the stats are 78degC regardless UK/Jap, although they do still run at mid 80's. Car should warm up pretty quickly, and the guage, when at normal operating temp should pretty much sit dead cantre of the guage at all times. Cars with AC have 2 fans, the extra airflow needed to cool the AC condensor core.

A friend had a similar problem with a Toyota and it turned out that the connector on the temp sender was not making a good connection and when at idle it was fine but as soon as you put your foot down the connection was too weak and down went the gauge.
Took ages to trace it as it looks like the temperature of the engine is dropping and rising as the gauge flows slowly up and slowly down so looks like it is losing/gaining temperature when in actual fact it is no signal/signal.. try checking the connectors are all clean...
Could be the temp sensor but would have expected it to fail not work and then not work.

JGM,
Had a look at the sender tonight, yep covered in crap. Given it a good clean and should know in the morning if it is fixed.
cheers, Bryan

My MY95 WRX does not do what you describe..... if you have fixed the therostat, it could be a gauge or the coolant temp sensor problem...
Oh, make sure you have got all the air ou of the cooling system as well..!!!

Hi Dan,
I think the sensor is working fine cos when you leave the car parked the gauge moves to half way and then the fans cut in. I don't think I have a air lock cos when the bottom radiator pipe is squeezed no bubbles are appearing just water leaving the header tank.
Have you two fans on your radiator?

yea my car has 2 fans....
did you get the correct stat because imports may have slightly different thermostats (not sure)..???
Could still be a sensor problem...
