I get a rattling sound between 2500 and 3000 RPM. It's fine after 3k.

My dealer has fitted a new downpipe, checked the heat shield and checked the whole exhaust system and found nothing wrong.

The sound is only noticable when the car is moving. If the car is revved at stand still there is no noise.

What can be causing the rattle?

Leaky D/V?

At Heritage.

It orinally went in for a rattle. So they put a brand new D/P.

It was OK for a 1 or so and the rattling sound was back.

When they fit a D/P does the heat shield need to be cut?

Dont forget this a std D/P and not de-catted.

Question

Oops - sorry - Std Downpipe so no cutting required...

So lets replay again...

Rattle Rattle...
"Obviously the downpipe sir" .... clu-ching of cash register
Having generally disturbed & tightened everything rattle goes away for a bit then...
Ohh the same rattle is back ("never mind you probaly needed the new ndwnpipe anyway" )...

What MY? - ealier models - renound for heatshield rattles....

Mine still does it - not when on the drive though - only when under a little bit of load & at a certain resonant frequency - approx 2.5k RPM in 2nd...

Subari Dealers - Can they Fix it - No They Can't

Luckily the D/P was fitted FOC under warranty.

The D/P was changed, but the old heatshield was still retained.

I get a rattling sound in every gear.

When I took on of the mechanics out in the car, he suggested it might be the D/V (Well I suggested the D/V)

They going to put it on the computer and check if it shows any problems.

The rattling sound is doing my head in.

Ok, so a later MY - 99+ ish - with DV on Intercooler - these don't tend to rattle - or not that I've heard of - so I'd be surprised (but prepared to stand corrected) if it is this.

Rattles on later MYs also less common - Heatshield Rattle generally = PreMY 97 (mines a MY96)

The fact that it does it every gear is peculiar - having said that resonant frequency is dependant on RPM - its just that I generally don't tend to sit at 2.5K in all gears - so probably don't hear it

Does Load - Boost level - or Speed affect it or is it purely RPM?

I still think its a darn heatshield.

Purely RPM.

The mechanic thinks its blowing or tinkering sound.

I'm goner ask the dealer to check the heatshield again.

Best of luck m8 - let me know how you get on - you're still covered by warranty so keep pestering them & insist on the Senior Technician not the spotty kid.

I have an MY99 and I've got a rattle too. I found out it's the up-pipe. The spot welds on the heat shield have rusted away causing it to come loose and it rattles up to 3000 RPM then it stops. Must get it sorted soon!

My moneys on heatshield too, had both the dp and uppipe heat shields go. The uppipe is a bit of a mare to replace. To check if its the uppipe have a feel down the side of the engine, drivers side, very fiddly, and see if you can make any metal rattle. Its more like just under the engine so you have to reach a fair way down.

Cheers

Paul.

This is how mine started. Thought it was the engine pinking at first, as it would only happen in 4th or 5th gear.
But it then got worse to do it in every gear and now does it stationary.

Is there an alternative to fixing up the heatshields ? Mine have been fixed a couple of times and one has been replaced but it's started again (MY95). Can the headers and uppipe be wrapped or something instead ? I'd be prepared to spend a few quid on a permanent solution if there is one rather than keep paying out every few months for another patch up.

hi guys. i am also picking up on a rattle from somewhere. had it on the rollers to see how everything was and that rattle i noticed turned out to be the car detonating. happens at 2000-2500rpm under load but really noticed it at 5000rpm ont the rollers. out on the road you cant here it at 5000rpm. i changed my MAF sensor and O2 sensor today to see if it was either of them but the noise is still there. good luck finding your rattles.

Gues what. It's the heat shield.

I had a look at the shield and there is one screw missing, this screw gets screwed to the D/P.

Will point this out the dealer and they told me they checked everything.

Question

hello,

Have you checked the brake pipes? These have been known to vibrate off the bulk head at certain revs if they are positioned to close. They can be simply bent away slightly. Or, I suppose, you could wrap any suspect sections with sponge/rubber stuff to stop them touching.

Ive just been told today that They reckon I need a new strut!!
Can any of you describe the rattle you get, is it like a metal against metal (quite high pitched) or a rumble etc. I know its difficult to describe noises without hearing them but I want to narrow down the possabilities before I have to order a new strut from JP which knowing my luck the Warrenty wont cover.

Recently had the rattle on my sport, asked to have it checked at last service. Same problem on previous car (a cavalier (ouch))
I didnt want to tell them what i thought it was, but mentioned , i'd like them to investigate. Mechanic said couldnt find/hear it.
I had to show him, cos it only does it on or passing certain revs;
around 2200. Sure enuf there it was.....cracked heat shield

The noise I had was kind of a knocking noise, don't really know how to describe it but I've found this on the SIDC website:
