Ive seen the HEC 716 's used in a picture in 21st Century performance book. I have ordered 16 coils from www.ingram.com.au, from a guy called John Bourke. Ordered about a week ago, so hopefully I should have them soon. 4 for my legacy, 4 for me mates, and 8 for my granada, but I may never end up using them in the granada them as it involves re-wiring my loom, and I dont really think I need it, as I already have a Crane Hi6 and CD coil. I just fancy etting rid of the dizzy. It just depends how lazy I am ( which is very )
I'll post pics when they arrive, and let you know if I think they are an improvement over std.
I may have 8 for sale, but not sure, just have to wait and see.
Price was approx OZ $35 ea, + postage etc. Not sure what the total comes to yet.

Can anyone suggest where to buy such an item ( or 4 actually ) without costing an arm and a leg. Someone from OZ said about the Bosch MEC 723 a while ago, but cant seem to easily locate these.
I want a single spark coil unit, for coil per plug application, hence 4 off.
Even if those down under can give me a supplier so I can buy them direct from Oz.
Are any of these HKS Twin power ignition things any good, and what actually are they??

Stevie,
I've got a contact in both Oz and NZ who sources things for me. I'm not at home for the next few days but if you email me (to remind me) I'll pass the details on when I get back.

Stevie, if there is nothing wrong with your legacy ones, you can mount them remotely, which is what you have to do with the bosch ones anyway. get an HT lead from plug to coilpack and mount a pair coilpacks on a plate, attached to head, manifold, or inner wing.

Hard to say whether there is anything actually wrong. Remotely mounting, and tryin to neatly put leads into the std legacy coils, doesnt really bother me. I would prefer to have a better coil to start with.
The problem is, that the car seems to be reluctant, in a missfire kind of way, to go above 1.7 bar. There is no reason why this should be a problem, so I am suspecting the std coil packs are just a bit tired, or incapable. Plug gap is already at 25 thou ( inches of course )
Either way, I want to uprate, with something to give a guaranteed big spark, all the time, and the bosch coils look pretty good.

I find the same problem Stevie, slight hesitation especially around the maximum torque point, guess that's because of maximum pressure there.
Have you tried the plug gap even smaller ?
I never had this problem in the cossie, wonder if you can fit 4 x standard cossie type coils ? Or would the current drain be too much ?

There are a number of people looking at getting some bosch coils, so maybe a bulk buy could be arranged, at least you would only have to pay one lot of huge delivery.

Andy, I havent tried closing the gap, I think 25 thou is small enough. If there isnt enough power to fire that, then better ignition is needed.
Crusty, are the Bosch coils much better than the std ones? Are they used often as an upgrade over there on Subarus?
Ive been in contact with www.ingram.com.au and they say they can supply me with the Bosch MEC 723 coil, at approx AUS $ 35 each, so it seems pretty cheap. On pics of some Rigoli tuned cars, they use remote mounted coils, which look similar to the bosch one, but dont know for sure if it is the same one.
I would just like to be sure that they are better than the subaru ones, although Im going to try anyway, coz they arent dear.
I see no reason why you couldnt use 'cossie' coils or similar, but personally, those old oil filled canister style coils look crap, and to have 4 of them.... to bulky, and crap looking.
Modern transformer coils are much more compact, and may be more powerful, but not sure.

I cant see the postage being that much. Ive ordered plenty of things from abroad, and its usually OK. The worst bit is when the f**kers at customs in the UK get it, and charge all sorts of weird and wonderful taxes, to line their pockets with.
I just hate paying them the money. I will try and get them sent 'warranty return' when I order, to try and avoid ay duty, but they will still try. They even charge duty on the bloody postage ffs.
Last email I sent them was yesterday, bit it will be the weekend now, so will probably have to wait til monday to confirm the order.

Hmm, when I bought the ntk sensor from the parts bin they charged seperate for the delivery, as a result the delivery cost wasn't on the invoice.
Customs like to see invoices and stuff if they open boxes, but that's not to say you can't pay in 2 transactions....

I usually ask them to send warranty return, and include NO documentation or receipts. I ask them to post the receipts seperately in an envelope. Dont even put a value on the parcel for insurance purposes, as they will charge duty on that too.
Similarly, they can send as a Gift, Free Samples etc. I'll try anything.
Most recent was a fuel pump and injectors at approx US $ 1000. Got through no probs, as free samples, which was on the receipt with the items, on the box. No postage value was on teh documentation either.
Same applies everywhere...tell big brother and the government nothing.

Yes, but free samples....Im not saying it will get through, but its always worth a try.
Yes, I would like to be sure that they are definately an upgrade from the subaru coils before I buy. So if anyone out there has actually used them, or can supply more info then it would be appreciated. I do recall however, and possibly he may share some info, that Marks car IS using standar coils. Have you ever had any ign problems? Have you any thoughts on the mattter Pat??
Has anyone ever used or any info regarding the HKS twin power thingy, and what it actually does?
If the bosch coil does appear to be good, I will be ordering at least 16 anyway. 4 for me, 4 for my mates legacy, and 8 for me granada.
I also have a crane HI-6 amplifier, so I wonder if this too would work with other coils?? I think it basically throws a few hundred volts at the primary side, instead of 12v which will boost the firing voltage at the plug.

Marks car is using standard coils, I can't remember from what model though, the recent ones I think. He had an old style one and wondered what it was from. The original intention was to run the standard wasted spark setup, but that went out the window, dunno why.
From what I have been told the legacy ones are better than the early impreza ones, much less prone to breaking down etc.
The easy was is to get them spark length tested, it could be the amplifier too I suppose.
25thou, is .63mm which is quite small, but not excessively so, I've run to 0.5mm (20 thou) but on a normal style fat electrode plug NA engine mind.

Hows it going , I live down under in New Zealand I could possibly track down some prices in NZ dollars if you guys were interested, theres a place just down the road which sells all the bosch gear and coils, I was going to do this car to my car as soon as I get it going again Ive heard alot of good things about improvements when more powerful coils are fitted to replace the standard ones which often detoriate over time. From memory I saw them in a local automotive supplier for about NZ $45 which is about 15 pounds I believe, they were red coloured and similar to what the rigoli car runs. Ill check this out further and get some part numbers.

Hi Guys, Yes I noticed a definate improvement after the Bosch coils were fitted... smoother cold running and made power much higher up the rev band (5,500rpm +)than before. There is just no downside to using these over the std jobbies !

Looking for new coils too.
Been led to believe that Prodrive sell an uprated coil pack - these have quoted by a dealer - cost approx 50% more than a standard coil (they're bad enough!)
Anyway will investivate further to see if
a) Such a thing exists
b) what the claimed improvement is
c) RRP
d) Group buy if economically viable
Chris
If not viable - I'd be interested in the Bosch ones.

Has anyone had to replace the single coilpack mounted on the inlet manifild on later cars (e.g. MY99)? If the new plugs don't cure my hesitation at full boost then i think i have to suspect the coil pack from what i am gathering.
How much and any performance versions available?
Thanks, Jon

I got an e-mail from him today:
"Thank You for your inquiry.
I spoke to Bosch today in regards to your inquiry. The difference
between MEC723 and HEC716 coils are as follows.
MEC723 1.1 ohm primary Fitted to Ford V8 with Ballast or vehicle
with 9 222 067 027 Trigger box.
HEC716 .41 ohm primary Fitted Hi Energy system or vehicle with 9
222 067 024.
Coils cannot be interchanged"
Soooo has anyone fitted these yet, I wonder if they are direct replacements and easy to fit ??
Any sparky boffins to the rescue !!??

1.1Ohm primary is pretty damn near the standard coil pack which should have a resistance of 1 Ohm
So certainly the ones to use.
Here's a link to Crusty's site - http://groups.msn.com/IMPREZAWRXPhot...pgmarket=en-us
Here's a piccie of them fitted
NOTE : You will need to find a suitable postion to mount the coils on the Off-Side and Near-Side and some suitable length of HT lead (Have a rummage through the various styles in Halfords, until you find a suitable set, should be the best way forward, as alot these days come with right-angled plugs which would do just fine)
P.S Yep, I'm interested, if some coils are entering the U.K.
I intend to sort mine out before the on-set of Winter.
