Ive just bought my 1st car and it is a MY00T. Ive noticed that when you are changing gear or are stationary and about to select 1st it seems very notchy to go in, is this the norm on most scoobies and is yours similar! Is their anything you can do to make this any smoother e.g better gearbox oil, i was thinking of putting a quick shift gear lever in would this reduce it much as the movement is less! The car is awesome though and its the best car i have drove as ive had a cosworth and an Integrale evo in the past and the driving position and the smooth power that the scoob delivers is brilliant and that wonderful Subaru exhaust note really does it for me!

I can only say that on the two turbos ive had the shift has been very positive and smooth. The last one had a Subaru quick shift, and that was very notchy for a few thou, but then it was lovely!

Castrol Syntrax is the oil to use, and can make a huge difference to the gearchange etc, depending on what is in it already, and how old it is.

Thanx, the car has got Esso 75/90 in it at the mo as i just rang The Subaru dealership where the car has had all of its ervices! The car was last serviced at 19,192 and it has got 20,092 on thew clock now! Sounds like no expense spared with that Esso 75/90,its time to take Stevie`s advice and drain that rubbish out and put some Castrol Syntrax in! Makes you wonder if dealer history is worth anything if that rubbish is going in, it helps to sell a car "Yes" but next time i take it too Subaru i will give them the oils i want in the gearbox and engine myself and so really i will just be paying for a stamped history book to keep the history up!

But the gear selection was still great, it just has no teeth on it now.

The twin turbo models have twin baulk rings which help the locking on the synchros causing smoother gear changes, certain WRX's also have a similar gearbox.

I took mine to my local dealers as I had a few troubles selection higher gears (including first) and thought the gear box was fcuked. They drove it and said it's not bad enough to strip the gearbox out, as a warranty claim may not go through!!! I was savage, they did however replace the gear box oil with a special "shell" one. I thought they were talking the pi55, but was advise to do 500 miles and see what it was like.

It's not perfect, but a hell of a lot better. Don't know if it's bull****, but was told that Shell produced this gearbox oil specially for Subaru ??

Cheers Phill C

PS Dealer should be able to help

Some of the scoobs I've driven have very notchy gear changes but mines feels really slack. Is this something I should be worried about as it really does feel a lot slacker than other 99's I've driven?

Raks,to change the gear oil, jack car up,there is a drain point at the lowest point of the g/box near a crossmember(21mm bolt i think?),undo this and drain into a container, replace bolt ideally with new washer, then fill g/box through the dipstick hole with a long funnel or hose,my gearbox took 3.5 litres to max,but i have read on here that some others take 4litres.
I used castrol syntrax gear oil and its made my box alot slicker(on the car ) top stuff..

The gearstick waggles a little when idling and there is a little movement when moving from coasting to power. There is seldome any restriction between gear-changes (as in you can't feel it meshing with the new cog or any restriction during the travel)

Sorry, thats the best way I can describe it

Used to hear Rock Oil or was it redline was good too..

Must do a search..

It is the filling through the filler (under the intercooler) that I feel must be the tricky bit.. Unless you manage to get a decent funnel.. it is on my list of jobs to do just never got around to it...

Search......

I have a myoo and have a notchy 3rd gear.just had 30k service so gear oil has been changed(dealers used syntrax).Has anyone tried slick 50 gearbox additive-says it improves gear change, but i do n`t know if it is compatable with our cars Just looking through the new castrol lube chart and they now list a FULLY SYNTHETIC oil for impreza`s.Phoned up the tech dept and they say it is only available in 25 ltr`s,but they might in the future sell 1ltr`s but he didn`t know when

mmmm....saxoboy, i've got no 'waggle' on my gearstick at all at idle and no movement from coasting to power. Sounds a bit odd.

I'll let someone local like JB drive it next time I see him and see what another scooby driver thinks. Doesn't seem to be doing anything it shouldn't so I'll try not to worry.

I don't suppose the "slack" gearbox would have coincided with changing gear whilst maintaining 75% throttle by any chance?

MY02, started very notchy into 1st when I had it, now (approaching 5k miles) its getting much smoother.

Actually, those gear-changes (which I've done twice only) actually vastly reduce the stress on the gearbox and drivetrain IMO but instead work the clutch more
