Air flow system (2.5 engine) american

No they are different between 99 and 00 they switched types. The 99MY has an MAF and the 00MY has no MAF but an MAP. The only similarity in appearance is they both have the large box off of the TB, after that they look very different. If you need pics of each I'm sure I can dig some up. Just e-mail me direct or poke around our site. There are some there.

Peaty,
Are you sure the later engines don't have a MAF sensor built into the body of the airbox? So no actual seperate sensor, but a sensor held in the airbox with screws?
I finf it hard to believe they would do away with the MAF, as it's still on the turbo cars, and would require a totally new ECU.

I am positive, the 00 has an MAP attached to the intake manifold. There is no silencer in the fender all the parts are under the bonnet. The airfilter is in the box off of the TB. The new US WRX's turbo motor (2.0L) has gone back to the MAF and has a similar airbox to my 99 with the air filter/silencer setup.

I don't think the wrx "has gone back to MAF" as the turbo motors have always used MAF sensors.
I just find it strange that they would not use a maf sensor when they do in just about every other model of car they have ever sold.

Since the WRX is new to us I really should have said it has an MAF
I think it's strange they went to the MAP too. Possibly it's because the 99MY across all models have had big problems here in the US with them going bad. A few months ago they actually did a recall and replaced all 99MY MAF's. For some reason Subaru switched from the hot wire type that the 98's and earlier were using to a thin film type. The updated MAF is still a thin film but from what I understand they changed the manufacturing procedure. I have not had mine go bad but I did have it replaced with the recall. I do know of others that have gone through as many as 3 replacements. Initially the cost of a replacement was about 350 USD! Later someone found the PN and we can get them now for 42 USD.
Some details here:

I've been looking for a good pic to link to that has side by side pics of the 99 and 00 motor but can't find any right now. This is the best I can do for now.:
