History.
MY95 sti, 60k miles, optimax, scoobysport exhaust system from CAT back. Drives OK but consumption seems poor at the moment. Engine warning light has flickered on twice in the last two weeks for about 1 minute each time but I've ignored until today, know I think it's related.

Question.
It's just failed MOT on the exhaust emmisions test which I had repeated the today following advise to get the engine really hot before the test.

The CO was normal suggesting the CAT is OK but the other readings were all over the place. Normal one minute, extremely high the next. The technician recommended an electronic diagnosis of engine as it looks as though it could be burning too lean.

My question is, is the problem likely to be a sensor? There are two sensors but I don't know where they are other than that they control how the petrol/air is mixed, are these likely to require replacement and if so how much would I be expected to pay including labour and VAT.

Give me the best and worst senario...

The MOT was carried out by a standard MOT type garage local to me, not a subaru specialist. They only stuck a sampler in the tail pipe, they didn't do any diagnostics other than exhaust gas samppling

Thanks Guys, in the end it WAS the lambda sensor and it cost me £398 including labour and VAT. Emmisions test now passed.

I thought about the halfords Lambda for £50 but i couldn't find anyone on this forum who had one trouble free for more than 6 months.

£398....

There was a wide band o2 sensor in the for sale section today for £110....

That seems steep...never mind at least you back driving economically.

Graham goode sell them for: £289 + VAT

Dan

It was Graham Goode who supplied and fitted it, which was why it came to £398.

I was in a hurry because it failed the MOT last week. The lesson I've learnt is that the next MOT needs to be done two weeks before the current one falls due, to give me time to solve any problems more cost effectively.
