Question

Gonna fit my new Magnex Centre Section (less cat & resonator) to my MY99 RB5 (non WR Sport version with ITG & Magnex BB) tomorrow; was also thinking about resetting the ECU? Got a few questions for you boffins out there...

1. Been running it on optimax for a while now - is it worth carrying out an ECU reset?

2. What is the best method - battery disconnect or black/green connectors?

3. Will the difference in the exhaust note be significant?

4. What sort of power/torque/turbo spool up gains do you reckon I'll get?

5. Where do you reckon I should turn to next - DP/ECUTEK2/Delta ECU?

6. Is the Magnex DP a real bugger to fit?

I feel like a sponge - sucking a wealth of knowledge from the bowels of Scoobynet's existence...

All info and mockery greatly appreciated!!!

replaceing the downpipe with a cat-less one will be more effective than changing your mid-section.

I haven't tried a magnex, I am a using a BPM TD-38 Twin-dump downpipe - bit expensive but worth it

What's the BPM like? Work well? The company looks like it's good at airflow type stuff but I've never heard much about them. Except their backboxes are about as loud as they come

1. Been running it on optimax for a while now - is it worth carrying out an ECU reset?
Yes

2. What is the best method - battery disconnect or black/green connectors?
I'd use the black & green connectors

3. Will the difference in the exhaust note be significant?
I would expect a nice tone once the exhaust is fitted

5. Where do you reckon I should turn to next - DP/ECUTEK2/Delta ECU?
I'd get the front cat removed and another downpipe fitted, doing this gives max performance from car allowing quicker spool up, can't quote figures but find grin is bigger. You'll also notice good fuel consumption too

Can't help with the rest. Sure you'll enjoy

Fantastic Caz!

Thanks very much for the info! By the way - managed to get some ramps for the job, wasn't too confident on jacking from the Dif or Axel standing on the wishbone bolts.

All I got to do now is cram it all in and mow the lawn before the missus finishes work!

Hard Life...

DP is always a very worthwhile mod. The magnex is no harder/easier to fit than most any other downpipe, but quite a bit cheaper, and very good quality. And it will sound good.

Spoke to one of the guys at Power Engineering and they said that they don't like fitting Magnex DP's - apparently you have to get a scaffold pole on the job and heat the section up for it to fit without clattering?!?!

I think the guy was right - dunno if I'd be too chuffed if I saw a mechanic bouncing up and down on a scaffold pole that was sticking out of my motor!?!?!

Just wondered if anyone had any specific experience of fitting the Magnex DP at all?

In anticipation...

Thats becasue they want to sell you one of their downpipes, at maybe twice the price. If they went anywhere near my car with a scaffold pipe, I can tell you where that scaffold pipe would end up. If that is their general work methods, then Id stay away. Ive fitted a few Magnex Downpipes, and systems, and have never had any problems. IMHO, they are the best qualtiy british made exhausts, with the exception of the likes of H+S.
Did they seriously suggest that they would attack someones car with a scaffold pole, simply to fit an exhaust, which isnt that difficult??

Question

That was the general thread of the conversation ustolemyname??stevieturbo!

Maybe you're right, but surely a company with PE's standing wouldn't try this trick would they?... Trying to pitch me on to one of their systems by telling porkies on a Magnex DP?

They do sell and fit Magnex BB's though.... Very strange...

IIRC some of the Magnex d/p's require a tech mod as the wastegate pipe comes in contact with the steering knuckle on right lock (or left can't remember). Thats why I didn't get one fitted, garage advised of customers returning complaining of steering column shaking big time on lock. I believe Magnex were addressing this.

That'll be why they used to try and heat up, then manipulate by any means necessary (i.e. scaffold pole) the DP - to prevent the knock?

Well, finished fitting the m/s and have reset the ECU :-)))

This however, has presented me with some more problems...

1. Excessive tyre usage!

2. Excessive brake usage!

3. Trying to get rid of inane grin on face!

She sounds beautiful! Even more of a hum to her now! That has got to be one of the best 60 sheets I've spent...

Keep it moist,

Shanno

Caz,

You'll also notice good fuel consumption too
Are you saying the consumption increases or decreases?

I would suspect increases if you use the extra power but decreases if you cruise lots at same speeds etc???

Another reason to change my downpipe!!

It should be more efficent shouldn't it so you should get better mpg if you drive it lightly..

Not that Scoobies drink much petrol!!

The twip dump pipe on the magnex easily clears the steering knuckle. Ive seen others that dont, and it could either be a mongoose, or a PE T75. They both look very similar. Apparently it was a problem on some early twin dump DP's, when magnex werent even making DP's, yet PE were....sure they didnt get confused with one of their systems?

Dunno Stevie?

Reckon I'll wait a couple of months and then go for the Magnex... Wonder if I can manage it without the help of a dealer?

Do you have to fart about with the Lambda sensor at all? Can it be done off a couple of ramps or do you need a pit?

Thanks as always,

Shanno (the leach!)

It can be done off ramps no probs. Most of teh bolts can be got from above anyway. Some of the bolts can sieze though which is a bollox, otherwise the job is pretty straightforward. A few tricky bolts, if all the originals are in place. Spray loads of WD40, and let it soak in before you start. Also a good idea to remove the intercooler, as it gives you a lot more room to get at some of the bolts, although not essential.
As for the lambda, simply unscrew it from the old, and into the new.

Cheers Stevo, we'll see how that goes. At only £170 a pop, it's got to be worth a go - after all the raves you guys have been giving it...

Just be careful not to damage the lambda sensor.
