How it works: The SD Boost Controller mounts in-line between the intake manifold (or turbo nipple) and the wastegate. The controller holds the signal from the wastegate until the desired boost level is reached. By conditioning the boost signal this way, the following results occur:

a) Boost rise-time is decreased---significantly!

b) More boost "area under the curve" for increased mid-range torque!

c) Boost limit is raised to the point that you, not the ECU, desire!

now get back to work!!!!

Question

Standard MY99. Accelerates excellent in first and third but for some reason when I floor it in second it feels like the torbo is switched off.
Is it just me getting use to the car or has anybody else had the same ?

If you sit at about 3K rpm in 2nd then boot it, the car thinks it's an emissions test (apparently) and reduces boost to around 7PSI maximum.

Answer? Don't hold constant revs in 2nd

Nick.

At last the answer !
It always does it after I trundel out of work, 2nd gear same revs, then boot it out of the main gate.
Many Thanks Chiark!

Question

Is that just true in 2nd or all gears, if holding around 3000?

I thought the emission test was done with the car in neutral and just revving the engine. So why would the ECU take notice of which gear you were in ? Unless the emission test is done with the car on rollers and in gear ?

Its the drive by noise test not the emissions test we're talking about isn't it ?

Following one from what the others said, it's only in second gear.
If I'm dawdling behind traffic or waiting to boot it to overtake, I mash the throttle on and off quickly before applying full pedal and that seems to get around it.

A bit like double de-clutching with the throttle pedal !

Sorry, I dunno what it's for, but I do know that it only does it to me in second. I just dip the clutch, which works.

I tried this last night on the way home and it doesn't do it for me. When I floor it in 2nd or 3rd gear at 3000 revs it accelerates rather nicely thank you, no flat spots at all. So the theory that it is deliberate to pass some emission or noise test seems a bit iffy to me.

It is there to pass noise tests - honestly I find it has the rather weird side-effect when overtaking (& not doing the right foot jiggle) of 3rd seeming to have a lot more acceleration than 2nd
I think the effect (well, whether it's there or not!) will depend on your MY. Jap ones may not do it? Certainly aftermarket ECUs won't...

Mines a standard MY99 and it doesn't do it.

Mines a 99MY and does !

Have you tried deliberately holding it second gear on a light throttle (say 30mph) for 15/20 seconds as if held up by someone then nailing the throttle ? Most cars give half boost if you do this.

I only held it at 3000 revs for about 5 seconds. I'll try 20 seconds on the way home tonight and see if behaves any differently.

Could be ECU type - 800 v 802. 802 as fitted to MY00 gives all sorts of problems (surging from cold etc)- see ECUtek.co.uk.

Not sure if late MY99 cars will have the 802 ecu.

It's not just 802's, the 800's and 801's do it too!

Okay, I tried holding it in 2nd gear at 30mph last night for 30 seconds and then floored it. Same result. Seems to accelerate nicely enough. No noticable delay and doesn't seem to respond any differently than when I don't delay for 30 seconds.

And my ECU is an 800.

Correct me if I am wrong then but by getting a dawes device fitted taking away control from the ECU of the turbo should sort out this problem ?

It does. One of the best 'side effects' of the Dawes, if you ask me

I still want a Dawes device though for the 'side effects'

Hey Scooby Towers, I'd let that engine warm up a bit more before booting it :]

xyzpaul,
Work's 1.5 miles long! Needle on temp guage is just in the middle as I leave the gates and I never red line it so soon after starting up.

Scrappy,
Excuse my ignorance but what is a Dawes Device and where do you get one ?

Red face

Ever since I pulled out to overtake a queue of traffic and this happened (scared the **** out of me to suddenly have about 10% of available power in a so called performace car) I have since tried and failed to replicate this so-called emission test bug by holding the car at a steady 3k rpm for long periods of time....it seems that in some cars it can be re-created and others just won't do it.

Coincidentally just one week after the 3,000 rpm big stutter, brown pants moment, my MAF sensor knackered up.... mmmm?

PS my99
