Mobil 1 Specification?

There is not much wrong with the oil except that they have invalidated your warranty as things stand as that oil is not recommended or tested by Subaru, if you have a problem with that in the car they can legitimately decline the warranty on the grounds that the incorrect oil grade has been used, suggest you get the dealer to sort it pdq as you would only have redress on him for incorrectly using that oil.
btw I onlu use Millers 15w:50

The Turbo Impreza MY2000 came back from main dealer service last week with Mobil 1 0W40 engine oil installed.
Seem to remember this does not protect turbo seals etc when hot. Cosworth owners were discouraged from this spec because turbos were failing.
Staff at the dealership seemed to think that all Mobil 1 is the same!
Some other dealers stock Shell synthetic 5W30.
Need some confidence that the 0W40 is ok.
Can anyone advise.
Thanks

You're right - the 0w40 stuff is not OK, and there is not only one type of Mobil 1 - the stuff that they should be putting in there is 15w50, or I believe another one which they can get hold of which is 5w40 / 5w50 / something like that!
The 0w40 stuff they put in isn't approved by Subaru, AFAIK. They should change it to the correct stuff & be very nice to you

Jeff,
I used this in a UK MY97 Turbo for 3-4 services. The car did 3 track days, a session at MIRA, and had 50,000 miles on the clock when I p-ex'ed it. It never used a drop of oil and ran fine. So I'd not be too worried. I'm now using Silkolene ProS 10W/50, purely to meet IM's oil criteria.
Regards,
Ian

I had a conversation with my dealer last month after engine failure - unconnected to the fact that I had just had 15/50 Mobil 1 Motorsport put in at service.
We were talking about 0/40 and they showed me a technical briefing saying that whilst it COULD be used, Subaru did not advise it.
Also, years back, my Legacy Turbo started getting tappety because I'd been using Mobil 1. Good oil, but not suited to Subarus IMHO.
Why not ask your dealer to call Subaru technical to check ?
