Without a flamer kit, you can have flames by decat full system, airfilter and a dumpvalve.

As said above check you are getting a spark. Also make sure the car has been driven around for at least 15mins then revs the **** of it and watch for results.

from what I've read about them you won't get any flames unless you have a full decat exhaust system. With DP or centre cat in place you won't get any unburnt petrol vapour to ignite.

Ahhhh, just read the thread properly.

You definately need the full decat for it to work.

It's all about getting unburnt fuel down there. As Scott (how's it going Scott - heard my new exhaust come past yours yet?) subtly pointed out, you need a full de-cat to let the fuel make it to the tail pipe. A VTA dump valve helps lots too - this lets out air that the engine metered before it gets to the injectors. The ECU doesn't know this and puts in enough fuel for that air too, resulting in much more overfuelling on lift off - i.e. more to burn. I believe.

These seem to be getting disturbingly popular locally! Group buy on fireproof front bumpers anyone?

Sorry but it all sounds very sad IMHO. If it serves no other purpose than to make a flame but has the side effect of shortening engine life then I can't understand why you would fit one

SWS, how does a flamer kit shorten engine life?????
Damage to a rear bumper perhaps......

I could be wrong but the excess fuel could cause bore wash? This is not good for the engine

Might even extend engine life slightly as a VTA gives overfuelling and therefore cools cylinders better on over-run?

However, I'm not fitting one

I understand that the flamer kit itself does not cause the overfueling but the way it is described here you need the excess fuel (often by fitting a VTA dump valve) to be able to get the flame. So it is the way you go about getting the excess fuel in the exhaust that is going to cause the problem IMHO

SWS, that would be the VTA rather than the flamer kit then
I am a closet flamer kit lover

Virtually all fuel injected cars have a fuel cut off on the overrun for emissions reasons. Fuel is usually only restored on a closed throttle a few hundred rpm above normal idle rpm. If this was disabled then bigger flames would im sure be possible, if it really amuses you so much.
Get a programmable ecu, or see if someone can remap the std one to allow fuel to be injected on the overrun.
If they then threw in a load of fuel every time the throttle was shut at high rpm also, then big flames might be possible. Obviosuly as mentioned, a full de cat would be needed.

Just another excuse for the old Bill to pull you over?
I followed two Escort Turbos and a Sapphire Cossie to an RS meeting a while back and all three were obviously fitted with flamer kits. They certainly worked well and it was entertaining to see a guy in a BMW pull alongside one of the Escorts and start shouting and gesturing through the passenger window. He was either congratulating the guy for such a good display, trying to tell him his car was on fire or suggesting what a complete prat he was. Got a feeling which one it was!
I know that the cars involved were well modified and very quick, on which basis I have to admit I found it just a bit sad. The next accessory will be a rear TV (as per the new Primera) so you can actually see it work?
Be careful while the firemans strike is on!!

Followed my mate after he fitted a flame kit to his 96 WRX, and the only way it worked well was on the over run after high revs .... some big flames then ... funny to watch but one of the last things i would fit to my car.

Its sweet it works now. massive flames coming out the back (funnily enough) on overrun and when you boot it from holding it in gear on half boost.

Downpipe goes on on Friday so they should be even bigger !
