Question

Anyone know who makes this boost gauge, available through your friendly local Subaru dealer... and what are those units?

I can get this, fitted, for £160 inc VAT. I don't think this sounds too bad...

Cheers,
Gareth

Thanks - just wondering what's better about a Defi gauge to justify the extra cost?

Edited to say that I can't see your pic so sorry if that makes my question particularly stupid...

Cheers,
Gareth

a gauge can cost from £30 to £100s,they all do the same thing so it comes down to personal choice i.e. cost, features, looks.all the top companies make them, blitz apexi hks blah blah blah
the lamco is a v.simple gauge and seems expensive to me

OK, cheers...

I still think that pod is better than any of the alternatives I've seen for a single gauge, and getting someone professional to fit it is worth quite a bit to me...

I'd love to get the Lamco one with the pod to go on the steering column but the price seems OTT.
Anyone know who can do the same package but at a realistic cost?

So which models is it factory fit on? P1? And is it a mechanical gauge?

Edited to ask: is it illuminated?

Looking at some of the other sites it seems I'd have to pay £100 for a single gauge + an inferior pod. I don't really have the know-how to fit myself so factor in 1-2 hours labour, and £160 for the above still doesn't seem that bad..

It's not OEM fit on any Impreza, it's for aftermarket fit.

We have one on both our STi7's.

I fitted them myself, in around 45 mins each.

They are backlit.

They are mechanical.

They are calibrated in Mpa - megapascals. 0.1 Mpa is approximately 1 bar.

IMHO, they are good value for money

Thumbs down

Well I think its an outrageous price!!
A reasonable 52mm gauge is about £45-50 and an A pod is about £35 so thats £85 top wack.
The Lamco is something like a 35mm gauge (£40 IF it could only be sourced other than Subaru) and a very small pod to clip into the column surround (£25 again if only it could be sourced).

£160 is taking the pi$$, so if there are any suppliers who can do better then I'd love to know.

Nick,

Don't work about Dave T-S; he's got more money than sense by the sounds of him. If anyone thinks £160 is good VFM for a boost gauge, they need their heads examined. It looks complete **** for that sort of money. At least with the Defi's or Blitz the gauge looks like it's worth the money.

I've been in cars with the a £40 boost gauge in my passengers hand that was plumbed out the window and under the engine and it did the exact same job as other cars with a £150 Defi, Blitz or Lamco gauge.

If you want looks, spend the money, but if you want the job done keep it simple.

Stefan

P.S. All IMHO of course

I wan't really replying to Dave, I was moaning about Subaru as usual - though I suppose all manufacturers end to put a nice mark up on such things.
I do tend to count my beans a lot and try to avoid losing them.
Thats why my current gauge is held to the A pillar with duck tape
However, I am on the look out for a new guage to be a little less obvious to scumbags and the Lamco one does look so right.

I've got loads of money and loads of sense

And anybody on here will tell you I never pay anywhere near retail price for anything

The LaMco gauge is useful as it sits on its own pod on top of the column and is in the line of sight without being in the way. Still, if duck tape is your preference, then you can make your car look like a sh1theap - cheaply

BTW, the cheapest Defi 52mm gauge and mount is £175 from Nitosport - plus fitting of course so it doesn't exactly make the LaMco one expensive....of course, you can get a £40 piece of crap and use the duck tape as mentioned. Bingo, nice and cheap job....which will look exactly that

But, ultimately, I am sure we have answered Gareth's questions and he can now make his own mind up - we can agree to differ as to whether the LaMco one is VFM or not

Thanks to everyone for their answers and opinions...

It certainly doesn't feel like I've got more money than sense, but on the other hand I didn't spend what I have on my scoob to get into DIY mechanics. Forgot to say I can put this sort of expense through my company so the net cost is nearer £100. In that context I think it's more than reasonable.

Cheers,
Gareth

Sorry guys, not exactly related to this thread, but.......

Since I got this guage fitted by my dealer to my Prodrive STI, I was just wondering if anyone knows if you can change the colour of the bulb to match the other instruments when lights are one.

I also didn't pay anywhere close to RRP for this guage, and the best thing of all was that I jsut said to them that I wanted it, and it was already on the car when I collected it from new.

I have had the Lamco gauge fitted by my friendly dealer and paid a trifle more than Zippy but again not full RRP. Have to say it looks great , matches the dash superb. Well pleased - You pay for what you get.

Shaun, i've tried to dismantle the boost gauge to have a look at the bulb change possibility but its a sealed unit, the only way to open it would cause damage to the rubber casing.
It will have to stay white instead of green.

The gauge just pops out of the front of the rubber pod (when you buy the kit they are separate) - you need to gently push it from behind with a thin blunt ended tool through either of the holes in the back of the pod. The bulb is then in a push in holder in the back of the gauge casing.

NOTE - don't blame me if you bugger it up getting it out of the pod, or break the steering column shroud if you try and do it on the car - it is probably best dismantled having been removed from the shroud!

Well, I'm having one of these fitted on Thursday. Do you think it's worth asking them to fit a green bulb while they're doing it?

I'm also thinking of getting one fitted to my MY02, but trying to decide if its worth getting the triple-pod with oil temp etc too. I'm planning to get the PPP but no other mods. Is it going to be necessary at that level of modification...I guess its always worth knowing your oil temp and pressure?

Also if 0.1 is 1 bar, how much pressure should a standard MY02 be putting out?

thanks

Personally I wouldn't bother with the full pack unless you're doing trackdays etc and even then it's a bit unnecessary (and very expensive - but we won't go round that one again!).

I'm only getting the boost gauge because for some reason my car was running slightly low boost til the dealer reset the ECU and I want to keep an eye on it.

I'm told that a WRX with PPP should be running 1.0 - 1.2 bar, I'm guessing standard WRX is nearer 0.9 bar.

Cheers,
Gareth

Just to say that I got my gauge fitted this morning. Boosting to 1.2 bar (17.4 psi) by around 2800 rpm depending on load (seems strongest in third) then holding at least 1.0 bar (14.5 psi) through to 6000ish rpm. Guess I'm going to have to look elsewhere to unleash a few extra lbf/ft...

Had a battle over the price (dealer had misquoted and was trying to charge me full retail) but held my ground and paid £157 inc VAT.

Only surprise was that they fitted the gauge on the left instead of on the right as per the photo. Doesn't make any difference as its so small anyway.

Also got an annoying rattle when I hit 6000 rpm that wasn't there before

Had asked in advance if they could look at fitting a green bulb but they weren't keen, so its white. Looking forward to hearing if this is easily fixed...

Cheers,
Gareth
