Scott,
firstly i take it that your car is now fully decatted?
Those pops are made when unburnt fuel ignites on the hot metal of the exhaust (or something like that) and thus you get pops and bangs (and flames )

pops and bangs were always there, except with the factory silencer, they get silenced, strangely enough.
H&S silencer is a straight through design, which just, muffles the overall sound, std has some baffle and resonator sections which will remove some sounds all together.

All I've got on mine is an afterburner backbox (Hayward & Scott). I'm thinking of upgrading the rest of the exhaust system. Does anybody have any suggestions what else I could upgrade??

the rest of the exhuast system at a guess?
I currently run with H&S downpipe and Backbox, have a resonated decat centre waiting to go on.
Downpipe is worthwhile upgrade, seems to make the car nicer to drive overall.
