Question

Hi Folks

I had a Tek 2 put on my 99 Turbo yesterday and was wondering if the following figures were what would be expected....

Pre Tek 2 Boost 13.5
Pre Tek 2 BHP 248
Pre Tek 2 Torque 230
Pre Tek 2 Power At Wheel 170

Tek 2 Boost 15
Tek 2 BHP 248.6
Tek 2 Torque 245.7
Tek 2 Power At Wheel 170

The car has a full decat Scorpion system, an ITG filter and runs on either Optimax or Super Unleaded.

It was rolling roaded when it was put on and both the torque and bhp curves have shift back in the RPM range. The torque curve rises much quicker and stays flat for nearly 2000 rpm at just over 240lbft and 3500rpm.

From what I've read I would have expect probably higher figures or am I being a bit optomistic?? Or could it be the RR I used was a bit more accurate than some of the others???

Steve

The car does feel quicker than before but not "that much quicker". I've got a boost gauge fitted so can see the boost is improved but its not got the punch I was really expecting, maybe the car was 2 good to start with.............

Boost control is a thorny issue with the 2 port boost control solenoids that the MY99/00 come with. Ideally your boost would hit target (just) in 2nd to 4th gears with a small overboost in 5th in all conditions. The reality is if you get remotely near boost target in 2nd gear in hot weather the first time you put your foot down you turbo will probably boost incredibly high on a freezing cold trackday in 5th gear. So you are left with a compromise. Tek 2 has a 16.0 PSI boost target. Some cars hit this readily, some don't. Same with PPP. Short of using a Dawes (with a knocklink to be safe IMHO) or a 3 port solenoid with a custom remap there is not a lot that can be done to improve it, well there is - you could fit an adjustable restrictor valve, but it doesn't look very stealthy. However, if you adjusted it just for summer winter, you would get the sort of boost control you want more of the time.

Can't comment on the figures, but how does the car feel? Do you think it was worth the cash?

Talking

I easily managed 258bhp and 257lb/ft with a Tek2.5 with a full decat when I had my UK99 car. It was running filthy rich aswell.

I was running mine with a Dawes device, only holding 1.15bar when it could have gone to 1.25 safely. Had I been running at the higher boost it probably would have made another 5bhp.

I think to fully enjoy the Tek2 map it's better running with a dawes, just keep an eye on things on the knock/lamba side.

RR figures should be taken with a pinch of salt

When I had a dawes and decat on my MY99 I got 266bhp and 257lb/ft. My defi gauge read 1.1 held.

Then I fitted a TEK2 and got 253bhp and 251lb/ft. Gauge holding 1.05/1.1. However, on the road I'd done a comparison with a friend, with the Dawes we were both identical in performance. With the TEK I pulled away low down and he pulled back level higher up because the Dawes held boost longer.

I then had a TEK2.5 done with the boost upgraded to a 17Psi boost target and held longer. I then got 259bhp and 256lb/ft. Not a huge improvement and was only getting 14.5PSi held according to delta dash. A few tweaks later and the car now holds 1.25 in 4th and 5th. It was RR'd again at 256bhp and 257lb/ft, but I knew the car was much more powerful than that. (RR was PE in all cases).
Turns out the car was only hitting 1.05 on the rollers (as often happens) when I get 1.25 on the road. Thats a difference of almost 3PSi. So the car should be good for around 275bhp ish and 265-270lb/ft (well, I can keep up with P1's ).

In other words, don't worry too much about the figures, if you think its better then thats all that matters and it probably is

Don't forget the TEK2 has a much smoother power delivery - so you won't get the "punch" as much anyway .

I'd also give it a few weeks and few hundred miles, as it does increase slightly as ecu learns to push the boost as much it can.

Also, noticed with delta dash that when you start the car and do the 1st and 2nd full throttle runs, we (friend and I) noticed the ECU doesn't give full boost (eg 15PSi) the first couple of times. On the 3rd ocassion of full throttle the ECU was giving more/full boost (eg 17PSi). No idea why, but was the same on 3 cars he tested!

The turbo casing and EGT are not up to temperature the first few WOTs.

So with it running warm after being driven for 20 minutes or so would you expect me to be able to hit 16 PSI?

Mines is well short of target in 2nd and 3rd! Usually about 1.19-1.2 bar when target is 1.25. It would be so nice to get 1.25 all the time

Saxo you don't know you're born with that compared with the standard ECU with a 2 port solenoid!
