Preventing CEL

'ello all,
I've got a MY01 WRX and the previous owner had an uppipe installed without a sensor. As such the CEL stays on the whole time. What can I do to prevent this keeping the CEL on? TIA

Scoobysport (and some others-although not sure who) do a CEL fix which stops the CEL coming on. The CEL will still come on if something else triggers it (so I'm told) but hopefully will never have to find out.

If you still have your cats in place and the light is flashing on and off, its most likely to be a misfire.
A CEL fix only affects the signals from the rear O2 sensor, to stop the ECU giving a "Cats below efficiency threshold" error code.
You should get your car checked with a Select Monitor or Delta Dash to identify the problem.

Swan, contact Jap-Innovations in Oldham (0161 652 0920) or e-mail MRT in Austrailia as they make the CEL unit that connects in-line with your rear 02 sensor to cure the P0420 CEL code you are getting due to no Cats on the car.
The unit does work and is a piece of cake to install.

Swan,Are you sure it's the up-pipe that has only been changed and not the downpipe, the up-pipe is direct from your engine into the turbo and the downpipe is the one leading from your turbo to the back of the car.If it is the up-pipe you have changed then you shouldnt be getting a CEL code because the downpipe has a HUGE Cat in it which should control the emissions and not cause the threshold code.
If it is the downpipe then even with the 2 other Cats (Up-pipe, Middle Section) in place the CEL will still come on.

Swan, have a look under your car, directly underneath your gear lever area you will see a white cable going into a bolt which then screws into your middle section of your exhaust, this is your rear 02 sensor, the CEL eliminator connects directly to the white and the blue wires of the 02 sensor cable.
This unit is what detects your gas emissions and will give you the CEL when you de-cat the car.
The job takes 20 minutes once you have the front of your car off the ground.

If the light comes on only when you get close to the rev limit it may well be the crank position sensor. There have been plenty of problems with these and the sensitivity of some of the earlier ones is poor so the ECU loses the signal at high rpm.
You really need to find out what error code you are getting.

Huzzit Pete,
I get the crank pos sensor light on my early 01 WRX. (Built Nov 00) and since I know swan, I know his was also built in Nov 00.
I've replace my crank pos sensor twice. Currently it seems to be behaving, but its usually a question of a 3000 miles and its back again - whats the best / easist / any fix for this ? Is it harming the car when it happens / comes on ? Doesnt seem to affect performance.
Please... help....

Hi Murray
The cars that have had this problem here have been fixed by swapping it and it hasn't re-occured. Fingers crossed for you.
Swan, the codes will be in the ECU, either in the current memory or the historic memory.

Ok, problem is the EGT sensor in the up pipe - as it's not there it's reporting a problem (strangely enough
). As I understand it this is only used to monitor temps to prevent damage to the cat. Anyone know what resistor can be fitted to give an "all ok" signal wrt temperature?
