Det can lead to big end failure..!!! The force of the piston being pushed down by det is what can damage the big ends... not a very technical explanation... im sure someone else can give a better description..

big end bearing...!!! in the term above... but in general i.e the big end of your engine is the bottom end or engine 'block' and internals.

Big end bearing is the bearing at the crank end of the connecting rod. The connecting rod, or con-rod connects piston to crank.
'Detonation' as the name suggests is spontaneous ignition of large portions of the inlet charge rather than a controlled burn from the spark. The explosive nature of the detonation can force the con-rod down onto the crank pin expelling the oil film between crank pin and big end bearing shell causing the bearing to bind a little. Repeat that many times and he bearing gives up.
I think many people doing Subaru engines at the moment seem to agree that det is the biggest killer of scoob engines.

If you imagine detonation as being equivalent to hitting your piston tops with a lump hammer really hard and all those times per minute according to the RPM, then you may become even more keen to avoid it. As Pavlo says, it is a killer! ![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
