just wondering if anybody technical knows aside from the CEL - what's the symptoms of a trashed 02 sensor?

There are quite a few symptoms..... the voltage could get stuck at a certain voltage, it could become slow to respond, it may not give a voltage at all. These can all be seen if you have an AFR gauge, if not then the idle could be a little erratic.... best let your dealer connect the select monitor to it if you have no AFR gauge tho.

blown heater element...may give you MOT problems as it will take an age to get up to temperature.

You can measure the Lambda reading at tickover with a voltmeter. It should pulse to 400mV or more a couple of times a second. Then give a constant reading between 600mV and 900mV when the ECU see's positive boost.
