Got myself a 1/8NPT tap for my Sump plug. All I need now is to know what hole size I need for a succesfull leak free tap

Anyone ????

Well, the minor diameter on the end of the thread is 0.3339" (Machinery's handbook) which is 8.48mm, so I would say try 8.5mm to start with, but you might do better at about 8.7, I think I used to use a 11/32 drill which is 8.73mm

My Mech Engineer here sid it would require reaming, which could of been a bit of a problem.

I'll give the 11/32 or 8.7mm a go, I think.

I've never had to ream the hole, and that was into stainless which is roight biatch.

I assume he mean't use a tapered/adjustable reamer? Urrgh.


You might want to just counter bore the first 3mm or so t 9mm or something

Yeh! over engineering as usual, this place is good at that.

I think I will put a countersink in it, just to help it on it's way.

Pilot hole for a 1/8 NPT is 8.4mm.
