Unhappy

Hi.

I own a MY99 turbo and just out of the blue it started idleing very irratically. I suspect that the MAF is malfunctioning but i thought that the CEL light would light up if that was the case. I´ve tried resetting the ECU whith no effect. Is there anyone who can shed som light on this subject. BTW it is completely stock.

maf failure wont allways throw up a check engine light...connect the 2 black conectors under the dash and turn ignition on but dont start car
look for check engine light if it just flashes evenly then no fault code
but if u get 2long flashes and 3 short ones then that i think is tha maf code
for full reset connect black to black and green to green and take the car for a run as this will reset ecu

I noticed yesterday that the turbo starts spooling almost immediately after i push the gas.... is this a common problem when there is a faulty maf or...

Any suggestions on what is wrong?

Exclamation

Maf or O2 sensor likely with the slim chance of throttle postion sensor.

Take it to someone who knows ASAP... it could go boom with faulty MAF and you don't want that

I'm still paying for my experience

I had exactly the same problem (lumpy idle, almost stalling when braking to a halt). No CEL but was dodgy MAF and lambda sensor. Both been replaced now Had to drive round carefully for 10 days while waiting for the parts (under 3000rpm) which was murder but you do not want to risk thrashing the car while it is in this state. Cars running like a dream now though.

No. The CEL will illuminate if the MAF sensor is totally b*gg*r*d (i.e. not reading at all). As long as it reads something (even if the something is wrong), you won't get a CEL, which is when problems start.

If the turbo is spooling up too quick/soon it could also concievably be a blocked actuator restrictor (possibly in addition to a failing MAF sensor) so this is an area to check.

BTW, Jon, there's not a lot of point the other guys telling you what their problem turned out to be. There are a number of potential causes for these sorts of symptoms and there's nothing to say that yours is suffering from the same problem theirs are.

The advice offered by Si applies equally to you - get it checked out ASAP and take it really steady until you do. Prosport in Stockport aren't far away and come pretty highly recommended. Much better to be safe than sorry, as sorry will cost ££££.

Thumbs up

get on the select monitor at your local scooby dealer and get o2 and maf readings.
I had the same and changed the MAF, then the o2, then cleaned the idle solenoid.
worked a charm, although I used a halfords own brand lambda at £25 in stead of the scooby branded one at £135!
