I think with the increased chatter of the wastegate comes the shorter life expectancy of your turbo.

Thumbs up

Well........

Saxo Boy gets this noise when lifting off on part throttle after fitting his new VTA dump valve last week.

He's got Full De-Cat, Tek 2.5, Dawes, STI5 intercooler, Scoobysport B/B and as far as I know runs on SUL with NF octane booster....

Didn't do it prior to the fitting of the dump valve so looks like there's your answer

I paid for HKS ssqv in hope of this noise.... no luck unfortunatly on a car that only had induction kit and 3" back box... hope the full de-cat will do the job, or the VF35..... and if that doesn't work i'll drive into the river.

Ok, test completed, ssqv=waste of money. disconected the damn thing for full rally sound effects, since i'm already getting a new turbo it's staying this way for now! FYI no change in lag at all.

The Forge VTA gave me it and it sounds great. It sounds brilliant when you get the full on TSSSSSH as well. But (there's always a downside) John Banks has BIG reservations about VTA's and unfortunately he's usually right. I'm only going to have the car for a few months so I'll run the risks he's outlined

If you want this sound, simply remove the dumpvalve and block the holes off.

Caution... your turbo will last less than a month

I wish!! I'm going even lower than a VTS. I'll give you a clue, whatever i get will get 50mpg and make one hell of a clatter at idle Just bought my flat, need to put my money into that not into fuel stations, nobles, tyre companies, etc, etc

blocking the holes off also gives the same risk of bore wash as a VTA dump valve as well as limited turbo life..

There's some good reading on this thread too....How to make MY00 sound like a rally car!

I have took my dump valve off and blocked all the hoses (for a different reason from getting the noise). I had a Blitz SS fitted and took it off, but it did make a distinct noise as most people walking down the street would tell you
To be honest I used to see the old grannies running for the bus stop in the morning because they thought my car was the bus coming round the corner (dump valve sounded like air brakes on the busses and the flat 4 rumble.....sounded like a bus to them I guess)

The fluttering sound is easy enough to get with a VTA dump valve, but as already said, the chirping sound is the anti-lag, unless there is a dump valve that makes the chirping sound?

removing the dump valve or useing a stronger spring etc etc on them vta dump valves will give u the noise

my mate had a vent to atmos one and he had a rock hard spring in his and his was supposed to chatter

i have a recirc pisto one on mine (TAS) becuase the standerd one was leaking, i have the option of setting mine to be stronger or weaker, i have it set at 18psi and sumtimes it does sound like its just about starting to chatter, i keep meaning to take it up to 30 psi and see if that makes it properlly chatter but im scared for my turbos life, turbos last between 60k and 90k im told

90k if there looked after, mines looked after but ive only had the car for 4k lol
its now on 62k so im kinda in the "zone" of it going boom lol

might try it for 10 mins and see if theres any gains to be had

Delighted with my HKS SSQV but it's not a touch on the noise you get if you disconect the capillary hose.... try it.... if only for 10mins, be careful though, it's addictive.

I always the chattering noise was caused by the turbo stalling, hence why it will not last long!!

I think so too, and when the impellor breaks up the bits will go into the engine and wreck that too!

AFAIK it's not safe to remove the dump valve if you are using a VF type turbo, as I wanted to take the dump valve off when I had a VF and was told not to, but now that I have a TD05 fitted, I'be been told it will be OK to take the dump valve off as it has been tried and tested.

I 've took the dump valve off full stop and don't plan on putting it back on unless I change the turbo to something that would need the dump valve.

I know I'm taking the risk, but I am prepaired to.
I know AndyF's car deosn't have a dump valve fitted or didn't, and he had no reports of the turbo shattering because the dump vavle wasn't fitted, but that was also a TD 05/06

Don't take my word for it though, it would probably be better speaking to someone who has run their car without a dump valve for some time, as I have only done it in the past couple of months and not used the car much in that time.

I have got a TD05 from Mark at Lateral P. to fit so i may try it then.

I Guess it all depends greatly upon the efficiency of the Wastegate that you have. Could you fit a better one to aid the turbo ??? Presume the WRC cars have top quality wastegates.

The more efficient the wastegate the less noise you would get... i assume as the turbo is stalling it is also surging, boost pressure to high for turbo speed so if forces it's way back through the compressor and out the inlet in pulses, hence the noise. I could be wrong but this is how it works on big diesels. Only there is a series of gunshot like bangs.
