Odd Defi gauge behaviour
#1
OK, got my 3 gauges up and running.Went out this morning, and it all worked great, came back, and set up the limits, and still perfect.
Half an hour later, eldest son wanted to see it working, so out we went.
The gauges refused to respond, in fact they just sat there, with the occasional click from them and the needles flicked slightly, then nothing.
I did a reset, (disconnected power, and reconnected) but no use.
Went to show him them lit up, and test to see if they still did light up, and they came back to life!!
Any suggestions anyone? Thanks,
Alcazar

Sounds to me like you have some cables the wrong way round.
I.e the 12+ve going to the Lights?
Or possibly a flaky earth?

Checked both, and not:, unfortunately, nothing so simple:
If that was so, how could they work OK one minute, and not the next?
Does anyone think it might have something to do with having had the ignition "on" for a minute or so without starting up, in order to check the Knock Link works??

Aha Getting somewhere now.....
Ok you should have the following wires from the DC source of your control box going to:
Red - 12v +ve Permanent
Orange - 12v +ve Switched
White - Illumination
Black - Earth
What should happen is when you turn your ignition on the Defi's go thru their start up sequence, then when you turn the car over they do exactly the same thing again.
Nito installed mine the first time and used the Hazzard warning switch for all the wiring as 1) Its neater 2) Its easier than using the radio wires, then I installed my 2nd set about 3 weeks ago with no probs.

Red - 12v +ve Permanent: mine goes to battery, via a fuse.
Orange - 12v +ve Switched: mine is connected to a switched live I found under the steering column
White - Illumination: same place: sidelights
Black - Earth: linked to both my Link earths, then via a ring connector to the bodywork at the ECU.
Does this sound OK??

Yep that sounds ok....
Ok, did you buy the gauges new or 2nd hand?
I say that because the pins can come out of their ickle plug things very easily, it could be that they have been put back in and got jumbled up or something?
I know this because the guy who bought my first lot of Defi's when I sold them, had a nightmare because the tw@t that uninstalled them managed to screw up virtually every plug by ripping the pins out of the plugs in the control box and then just put them in any order.

Brand spanking.
I did have one prob in that the oil-pressure sender wire didn't have a connector on the control-box end of the cable. Scoobymania sent me a new one within 24 hours of reporting it to them!

Scun thorpe. (Has to be written like that or the site censors it: )
I'll have to go out and test the wires again, if it EVER stops raining. I wish I'd not let our lass talk me out of a new garage/workshop, and into a house in France!
I'm also in touch with Defi in Japan, so we'll see what the outcome of that is. Thanks anyway.

Alcazar,
LOL
No worries mate, twas just a thought.
I'd be tempted as you say to re-test the wiring, if you've got access to a voltmeter that will make your job a lot easier.
It was your first post about seeing them lit up which brought them back to life which made me think that it could be a wiring problem.

Well, this is solved. I just had mail from Defi in Japan....what INCREDIBLE after sales sevice these guys have!
I checked out the orange (switched live) wire, and although it was live it WAS NOT 12V!!!! How odd! When I tried it with another switched live, all was perfect. Now I'm off to rewire them in the pouring rain, and also to move the control unit to the space that looks as if it ought to be a cupholder, but isn't:
Thanks a lot to all who inputted on here,, and especially Defi!
