whats the deal please.. why so many use it, has it replace SUL etc etc etc

it generally is a higher octane than SUL so therefore it is better in principle.

99% of Shell garages sell Opti, where as trying to find SUL is like trying to find ROS, unless you live in a mega city

Opti rules IMO

thanks for the tip, does it therefore negate the need for any sort of octane enhancement on a MY99 uk turbo?
what about the ECU reset, picking (fingers crossed) car up tomorrow and want to know whats what before I hurt it!!

Your UK car should be able to run on unleaded.
Use it first then try 5 or 6 Tankfuls of Optimax.
Then you'll notice the difference.
ECU takes a wee while to adjust to the different Octane rating.
