Personally I wouldn't, I've only heard horror stories from people who use non genuine filters.
Be safe get a Subaru one, they are not much money anyway...

I have been told that genuine subaru filters have a non return valve (to keep the oil ways full so there is no oil starvation during start up) and a bypass valve (if the filter gets blocked the engine doesn't get starved of oil) so for the difference in price (£5 for a cheap one or £10 for a genuine one with sump washer from scooby mania) it's not worth the risk of major engine damage
hope this helps, Mike.
p.s. if you are doing the change yourself remember to pre fill the filter, disconect the crank sensor and crank the engine over for a bit before start up.

well, ive used a halfords brand filter for the last 2 yrs,no probs here.
just trying to find the champion part number for the scoob oil filteras halfordsbooklets dont have them.
my local dealer is a 80 mile round trip, for an oil filter, seems **** to me to buy "subaru" brand whenall they prob do is stamp their logo on a unipart one.

Its a filter Jim, but not as we know it
Any Subaru specialist / dealer will have the OE ones
Blimey just read the date of the OP, hopefully Jims not using the same filter

Give your nearest dealer a ring and ask them to post it to you! If you pay over the phone then it should be with you in 1-2 days, that's what I do. If they have a problem doing that then PM me and I will let you have the number for the parts department I use. Obviously it doesn't matter where you live because they can post anywhere
Ha ha, do you still even own a scoob!! Things have changed since this thread was first posted. Delivery might be quicker due to the post being carried by the new motor car thing and not on a HORSE

The filter on the Impreza hangs vertically down, so oil will not drain. In reality the non return valve is unesessary. The Purolator filter for the Impreza does not have one and works perfecly well (and is the original, larger size) Virtually all filters have a bypass valve.
I've used Purolator filters (from Opie oils) with absolutely no issues and oil pressure on startup is instant, of course, as the filter is always full.

Nearly all canister filters have built in non-returns and bypass valves. If a genuine one has them 99%of direct replacements will also have them.
As long as the filter is made to OEM specifications, it'll be fine (OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturers).
Like alot of automotive consumables, alot of filters are made at the same factory, with a different brand sticker and put in a differnt branded box.
Crossland Filters were identical internally and externally to old style Impreza filters - even the same colour.
Unipart filters are identical to the new style ones.
Can't comment on the contruction of champion filters, as I haven't examined one though.
If the filter is manufactured to OEM, and the engine fails as a direct result of the filter. Then you can claim damages against the manufacturer.
