Have been servicing my 93 WRX with my dad since I got it a year ago. The cam belt was still pretty new, So we have left that. Its done just over 60k miles now. Alot of people on here talk of massive servicing costs etc and I'm just wondering what side effects I could get by not having it done properly. We are changing oil and oil filter every 5000 miles, but not a lot else.
What else shoudl I look at?!

I'm still waiting to find out too - I've been servicing my MY96 (uk) for nearly 2 years now. (The cambelt is an easy one to do, so don't worry about it! )
All you really need to do is change the fluids at the intervals specified most garages won't do a lot more... And they charge you for the privilage! Not my style at all. Carry on the DIY servicing to the intervals, and you'll probably not have a problem. There's enough knowledge on the BBS to fix just about anything Subaru related.
Your gearbox oil should be done shortly IIRC. You can find the service interval on www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm if you haven't seen it before...
You can get a workshop manual from http://www.jimclarkeracing.co.uk/~scoobynet/pre-my97/ I've found this very useful in the past.

60k is a big service, and the car should have all the transmission oils changed, new plugs, brake fluid changed, fuel filter, new coolant and a number of other bits and bobs. Doing the work yourself is one thing, but not doing all of it is a false economy.

Whilst you may have saved a few quid on servicing over the years, you may lose what you have saved by not having a service history. I would consider a car that had been serviced by a competent enthusiast, but the majority of people won't. In saying I would consider it, it would be at a lower price than something that had a genuine FSH as its virtually impossible to trade a car in that does not have a full set of invoices and stamps.

yeah I know what you mean about the FSH but my car is an import anyway, and being a 93 its not gonna be worth much in a few years when I get rid of it. The plan is to keep it as long as it works.
Did the spark plugs not so long ago, and the gearbox oil.
Seems like I'm doing the right thing at the moment anyway.
As it happens I just checked the oil tonight and surprise surprise the bloody things eaten loads of it so i had to top it up.
Anyone know what I should do about my steering? it makes creaking noises and a squeak kind of like brakes when turning right and back straight again. I've only noticed at very slow speeds, ie pulling on to my driveway. sounds a bit **** anyway.
And what about brakes that constantly squeak? really pisses me off car my car sounds like an old ford. It wasn't that long since I replaced the front discs and pads all round!
Cheers

copper slip on the back of the brake pads? (NOT the friction surfaces though! )
I suppose it depends on how long you are going to keep the car.
I did a few calculations and I would be saving approx £500 a year. Over the expected ownership of 5 years, I "save" £2500. By this time, the car will be over 12 years old, and not worth that much anyway...
I expect the rest of my proposed mods will kill the value even more...

Doing routine servicing on the scoob is so easy and you know its been done right. IMHO its a total waste of time taking it to a garage and let them rip you off. If more people realized how easy it was to work on there is no way they would be going to a garage again.
