Do you mean Gasoline? or Gas as in Butane Gas?

Have you lifted the bonnet to try and pinpoint it?

Checked your filler cap is on properly and the seal isn't damaged? The hot weather makes the fuel expand and maybe forcing vapours out of the overflow pipe

Has it still got its cats in? If so, this sort of smell is a consequence of the conversion, especially when the cat is cold or over-worked.

Nothing to worry about in other words

If, OTOH, you've had a decat, get your gas main checked for leaks

I had a strong cooking gas smell recently when I overfilled the gearbox and some burnt on the exhuast. I'd overfilled so much that the box wasn't breathing and the whole lot was cooked. The smell was disgusting. A rapid oil change to Syntrax soon sortd it.
I/d check for any oil leaks getting onto hot areas, esp. the exhaust. The cooked oil will look light brown and be a bit sticky..

Unhappy

I'm afraid the 'gas' smell is due to gearbox probs

Within a fortnight of me being able to smell it my gbox broke!

Mickey, gearbox oil has a very recognisable smell, slightly different from the hydrogen sulphide like odour the cats will give.

Have a good sniff of your dipstick and see if it's the same smell you're detecting. If it isn't, I'd still go with my original theory about the cats (if you've still got 'em of course!).

If it is, as the other guys have been saying, you need to check the gearbox oil seals - ideally by leaving a piece of newspaper under the car immediately after driving it, and checking it for dropped oil a few hours later.
