My thoughts on octane boosters

ok i have had my wrx for a few months now and have tried the 3 big octane boosters
first up on the advice of sum from this board i bought 10 cases of millers octane booster
i used all of these with optimax petrol
i used this (quite quickly) and noticed a slightly smoother running engine, it seamed to pull a lot harder but this could have been becuase i did a ecu reset at the same time and when i first bought the car it was suffering from a few idle/smoothness issues, once i used the 10 bottles up i thought i would try sum silkolene pro boost
this is a lot more expensive, i was led to belive that the millers was giving me a full 2 ron per bottle but i found out that this is infact 0.2 ron, sum research on the internet shows that pro boost gives 2/3 full ron per can, i was useing half a can per tank at first, along with a ecu reset this showed massive gains over the millers, the engine was much much smoother and pulled a lot harder/stronger, costing me £10.99 per can it was very expensive, sumtimes i cna easy use 2 tanks per week so the cost was pretty high, i tried a full can per tank a few times and got even beter results (apart from a dwindling bank balance ) i was pretty happy with the pro boost, until i tried sum NF race formula
i got this last weekend, recomended doseage for jdm cars is about 50ml per tank with optimax, i used 70ml, i was a bit sceptical as its not a lot of liquid to be adding to a tank to suposedly give the gains i was told it gives, to be frankly honest, i have been stunned, i use a andrew c scooby monitor and have been monitoring the knock correction with NF and the highest i have ever seen on the display is 1.5 in closed loop running, in open loop running i have not seen anything at all (i used to get 4/5 with proboost sumtimes)
i still have not preformed a ecu reset, i will do so at the next fill up, at 50ml per tank i should get 6 tanks out of a 300ml bottle, which is only £13, £2 more then the pro boost (which only really gives 2 tanks at a push)
i know which product i will be useing from now on, i have been doing a few seraches on NF and found this, its a long read, but pretty informative of diffrent ron values

I hope you are wrong about the Millers booster only giving a 0.2 RON increase. I have just ordered two cases of 10 with the understanding that each bottle gives a 2 RON increase. What possible use would a 0.2 RON increase be to anyone.

Wrx 03,
The easiest way is to disconnect the battery (not sure how long). The benefits gained will depend on the year of your ECU, and how quick it can learn to adjust to the fuel.
Can any body confirm my post above, ref Millers booster?

Wrx03, if your name implies the model of Impreza you have then I wouldn't worry about an ECU reset, the new age cars are manage knock correction much more efficiently than the classics.

yes unfortuanly its true, it only increases it by 0.2 of a proper ron point
i never bought anymore after them 10 bottles and even started chucking in 2 bottles at once etc etc
you would have to stick in like all 10 bottles to get the same gain as a can of pro boost, or 50ml ish per tank of NF race.
i was very new to the whole import and scooby thing back then and thought i was doing the right thing on the advice of others, to be honest i cant really see a use for millers at all as from memory they say sumthing on the bottle about not putting in more then 2 bottles at once or sumthing?

i buy my NF from www.tsunamiracing.co.uk
which is a short drive from my house, which is handy
i will be buying a bottle per week for a while to build up sum stocks, they tell me there getting 30 bottles in and when they get down to the last 15 there getting another 30 bottles in, so they should always have sum

Agree with you Micky,
Have been waiting to get some NF for months after trying Pro-Boost and Millers. Got 2 bottles from Tsunami Racing as well
and put about 60mls with Optimax in my Type R. The difference is unbelievable, the engine feels much smoother and more 'revvy'
P.S Micky did you ask for a discount? Managed to get a fiver knocked off for the 2 bottles

I cannot believe that Millers will only increase the octane rating by 0.2%! I know that Branko and Bob at BRD use and sell this and they told me it increases the octane rated by 2, 95 = 97 etc!! I guess they know their stuff!

the big thing to notice is the "points" phrase
theres a lot of confusion over RON points with people not knowing the diffrence

they also say 2 ron points but have been led to belive 2 ron points is actualy 2 full ron, hence why they think its going to put your fuel upto 100 ron, rember theres 10 points to 1 full ron

The general consensus is that the better the octane of the fuel the better the performance of you car will be. Obviously this has a physical limit, but in the UK its more a question of not being able to get decent fuel to allow any level of improvement. This is a particular problem for Japanese import cars which may have been mapped from the factory to run on 101ron fuel which is freely available in Japan.
Torque IC recommend using Millers Octane booster to improve the RON rating of the fuel you are using. A single bottle of Millers is advertised as bringing the rating up by up to 2 RON points. Combined with Optimax and similar fuels this can bring the rating up to 100ron or higher.
On cars with knock sensors this higher octane fuel allows increased levels of boost to be maintained without the same level of knock, which can in turn provide a level of safety when using the car in high stress environments.
The TIC staff use Millers on a regular basis as the performance increase is noticeable.

The advantage of the MILLERS fuel additives is that they also boost the octane rating of the fuel by up to 3 points i.e., 95 octane normal unleaded fuel goes up to 98 octane, the same as super unleaded, Super Unleaded goes up to 101 which is the same as the old 5 star.

Anyone ever had a lambda probe fail as it has been found to be covered with Octane Booster residue due to overuse (uk car) and not enough heat being generated to burn the residue off......

does anyone know if my 97uk car will benefit from octane booster or are there only gains to have with imports cause they are ment to use higher octane fuel

Dr Jim, although subaru will tell you there is no need for it, that doesn't mean there arn't any gains. I use octane boost in my 96uk turbo and definatly notice a difference, smoother and better running in general and slight power gains with some of the good ones. hope this helps.

Dr Jim, as far as I have read from many threads on here.
The reasoning, is that imports (JDM, I dont know about other Euro countries) have an ECU whose maps are for Jap fuel at 101-103 RON.
The max RON availble over here is somewhere around 98.
UK cars have an ECU mapped for our fuel.
By running a car whose maps are for higher RON fuel with standard UK stuff, you run a risk of det, or at least stressing engine components, which over time will/may go pop.
By using a booster with a UK engine, i dont know what benefits it gives other than; i have heard they seem to run smoother.
I dont know if there is any downside, other than you will probably be running a hotter engine; so I dont know if this factor will have an impairment to uk spec components.

BRD recommend and use NF Race not the other stuff.
Edited to say that I see BRD advertise Millers, but when they remapped my car and asked what i used - NF Race- the reaction was "good stuff"
