Question

I have a MY02 WRX coming up to its 12 month service. After reading many threads on here i believe it is best to use fully synth oil something like castrol rs10w60 or silkolene equivelant instead of the semi-synthetic used at dealers.I have spoken to dealer & they will use what ever oil i tell them to but the service manager claims that swapping to fully synth can cause small particles of dirt to be loosened due to the higher detergent content possibly causing damage to turbo! Is this true?Am i right to swap to castrol rs? All coments appreciated i don't want any huuuge bills!
Oh car has only done 6500miles(not sure if it makes a differance.)

That is indeed a potential problem but only if your engine is really dirty inside. Changing to full synth. in an engine with a sludge build-up has been known to cause problems by loosening the kak. With most engines it's fairly easy to see how clean internally it is by having a look at the cams through the oil filler cap, or indeed removing the cam cover, but not on the Scoob unfortunatly. If your engine has always been serviced regularly with good quality oil I don't reckon you'll have a problem.

You'll want to switch to fully-synth, but don't want the cack that can bring with it.
So switch it now before the cack builds up

The "loosening crud" argument is one of the reasons why it's generally advised to change oil more frequently than the 7500 mile service intervals.

The more often the oil/filter is changed, the less chance there is of muck deposits building, and the easier it is to get accumulated rubbish out of the engine.

This is the 3rd service in 12 months.
1st was @ 1000 miles
2nd 6 months later @ 3200 miles
3rd now due @ 12 months with 6500 miles
so i hope there will not be a build up of any deposits
Car hasn't had too much use as i broke my ankle & was out of any driving action for almost 3 months.

changed from semi to fully at 100k miles when I started servicing the car myself rather than bending for the dealer..

29,000miles later and no problems with regard to sludge or dirt or anything..

(if the engine blows tomorrow because I said that I let you know)

What he said was total bollocks, especially for a car of your age!!!

Yes, Synthetic oils have cleaning agents and loosen gunge from around things the worst thing that can happen in that instance is oil leaks, and maybe a slightly noiser engine.

Synthetic oils also have seal conditioners so once you have gone to fully synthetic don't go back because mineral oils will start to crack your seals.

I have read about changing from mineral-semi-full.
And have heard you should use a flushing oil if you want to chuck
full synth in.
So he's probably not talking total b0!!ix

Except you need to make especially sure that you've flushed out the flushing oil, so you may as well do the flushing with some fully synth in the first place.
I don't think flushing oil is a good thing with the scoob engines. Old piles of cack with vast tolerences which has been run on vegetable oil, yes.

Remember than 'clean' oil means that it's not picking up all the oxidants that's its job to find!
Clean oil doesn't mean good oil by any means - just that it hasn't actually burnt!

Oxidants are produced by the combustion process. Cack gets about
