I saw somewhere that if you space the heatshields away from the exhaust with 30 thou washers under the attachment bolts it decreases the likelyhood of the shields cracking.

Just wondered if anybody else could shed some light, I got my Impreza WRX about 5 weeks ago and yesterday it started to rattle when pulling away in first gear, I phoned the garage I`ve bought it from and they said it could be an exhaust heat shield coming loose(?) Could this be it or does anyone else know of another reason why its doing this??

 

Exhaust heat shields are very common.

 

Mine rattles everytime i go over a bump...learnt to live with it now.

 

Well, it could be an exhaust heat shield. As for other reasons though, there are thousands (hey, maybe tens of thousands) reasons why Imprezas rattle or squeak, so guessing the cause of yours is only slightly easier than winning the lottery.

Where on the car is this particular rattle coming from, and do you only hear it in first?

Hello, took my car to the garage and it was just the heat sheild so they have welded back on for me - thank you

It cracked once, it'll crack again. Take it off and throw it as far away as you can

got mine taken off by the garage just get them to do it they took all of them off on the exhaust even the one round the manifold no more rattle but a bit more heat in the bay O well
