Oil temp and 10w60 oil
#1
Recently been reading about 10w60 oil and its been developed for "racing" engines.
Also BMW are using for their V8s and especially the M5.
Some folk have said their oil temp is more stable with the 10w60 than the thinner full synth oils especially when loading the engine.
In theory the thinner oils will disipate the heat better....hence Mobil 1 and 0W30. But the 10w60 has been developed for the higher temp whilst warm and is not suppsed to "break down" until 300 degrees. But saying that the normal fully synths are not suppose to break down until 200 degrees.
Has anyone used the 10w60 and noticed more stable oil temps??

Yes. Having changed from Valvoline Synpower 5/50 to Castrol RS 10/60 in my 99my I noticed that, on a downside, the oil took longer to reach a good running temp. but once there it was reluctant to creep as high as with the previous oil. The pressure at normal temp. was 10psi higher than before,(idle and running) but then I expected that with the 60 rating?
I'm now waiting for the STi to accumilate a few more miles before the RS goes in.

Thanks for that. With you using 5w50 the oil temp is likely to have been more stable than if you were using 5w40. So hopefully I will notice quite a difference if jumping straight 5w40 to 10w60.
