Oil filter tightness
#1
I changed the oil and filter last night following the guides in the excellent oil change threads of late, but am a touch concerned that I may have overtightened the oil filter.
Had a quick look under the car at lunchtime and there's a small amount on the bottom of the filter, but I can't yet tell if it's just overspill from the initial fitting or if it's actually leaking. Won't know till I get home and can put it on the ramps.
So, in essence, is it possible to overtighten the filter and pinch the gasket - as I suspect I've done. If so, what should I do to fix it. If I've got to do it all over again, how much should I tighten the filter ?

I'd guess that it's just overspill/leaks from the fitting, or maybe even under-tightening rather than a knackered gasket.
It's a flat gasket, and thus difficult to pinch. As far as tightening is concerned, seem to recall that it's turn until the gasket makes contact with the flange, then tighten another 180 to 270 degrees.

Stu, if you completely over tighten the filter you will strip the threads on the filter, i always just smear a bit of oil on the filters rubber seal then tighten with both hands only, give it a wipe tonight then put some paper under it with stones on to see if you can see where its coming from, the filter tube is a bit far away from the filter to be overflow
