Question

Recently after any reasonable journey (not thrashed particularly) once I've stopped, I can smell something like hot burnt oil. A fairly loose description I know! The cars not using any oil and not dropping any. It's a STi3 wagon by the way.

Are there any general pointers that anyone can give me as to what/where I should be looking and or any suggested problems scoobies have that may be related to this.

thanks

This happened on my car and the garage that looks after it identified it without even looking at it as the cam cover gasket and the semi circular rubber seals between the head and cam cover.
Dropped it off on a lunch time and picked itup on the way home for tea.

Had a similar problem turned out to be a weep from the crank oil seal. A small amount of oil was running down when the oil got hot and thinner and burning on the exhaust heat sheild.

Also had oil leak from the power stearing reservoir as the o ring had gone hard and was letting by. Similar smell resulted !

Finally had a small oil leak from the stearing rack which allowed the od drip or 2 of oil to go onto the hot exhaust.

Worth checking out these as they all had similar results to your problem.

Had this today on my motor - not Scoob. Rocker cover gasket broken. Oil weeps out and burns off. Should be able to identify with clean finger around suspect areas. In my case oil on driveway was first pointer! D

Is it defo an oil type smell? if its a bit of 'sweet' smell your water pump could be leaking

also check the axle shafts...
possible leaky inner axle seal
on my Impreza,
i had axle grease leaking/spilling
ever so slightly onto the exhaust...

then all i would smell is that horrible burning oil smell
replaced the seals and no more odor...

just another option to consider
good luck
Jamie
