Question

Dear Scoobynet'ers,

I am going to be fitting my Dawes to my WRX 03 soon. In preparation, I would like to know how you manually reset the ECU.

I used to have a classic MY00 (for the last 3 years) and knew how to reset that. The MY03 looks different. What's the deal with this one?

Regards,
Steve.

Looks like I'll have to assume that the WRX MY03 (and possibly MY01 onwards) do not have a "manual" reset. Let's hope I never need to reset it, as the dealer will know what's been "played" with.

You're correct, the Denso ECU's don't have a manual reset function like the JECS ones. The Denso units apparently have a non-volatile RAM, so even disconnecting the battery won't do it. The only way is via a diagnostic connection, so you'll be needing DeltaDash, SECS, or a Select Monitor. Generic OBDII tool may also be able to do it.

If you're worried about warranty issues, suggest you leave the car standard!

Greasemonkey,

I believe NV memory is a pre-requisite for any OBD II or OBD III compliant vehicle, so as you say, reset is only possible with the correct tools.

Do you know if the Denso (MY03) ECUs store the vehicle mileage? I ask this because I would be interested to know just how long a joy-ride the joker that fitted my Tracker went on (he had the instrument cluster removed when he left to 'test' it).

I believe the odometer is just a simple pulse counter (as on MY97 onwards cars), so the difference between the odometer mileage and the ECU milage will roughly equate to my blood pressure level!

Thanks guys for the confirmation. At least it's good to know it's an "electronic" reset :-(

chrisp,

My reason for the question was just in case I did not correctly seal the pipe back to the standard electronic boost controller. On my last MY00 this could lead to a CEL that would need to be reset.

Thanks for the information on how the ECU quickly changes, I didn't know that.

Regards,
Steve.
