Oil Leek...
#1
Hi guy's,
I have a few oil leek at the mo, one i know is coming from the Rocker cover but the other i just cant track down.
I have drips coming off the oil filter but it's all on fine, might be dripping from somewhere onto the oil filetr...
Is there any common leaks that these engines get..
Its a 93WRX Import.
Cheers,
John.

power steering reservoir car also leak, it can leak down through the cam belt cover and will drip down near the oil filter, could also be the front crankshaft oil seal which is a bitch to do...
You could take the cam belt cover off on the battery side to see if the cam belt is contaminated with oil, this may tell you if its the front crankshaft oil seal gone..
The seal is about £5 but fitting it requires a new cam belt and possibly the rad out e.t.c..

sounds like front crank seal to me too.. should be changed when second cambelt change done but most dealers don;t bother..
Cost me £300 iirc..
I have all the parts on order to do one cam cover on mine..
the gasket, the half moons, the spark plug cylindicals, the bolt cylindicals etc.. you have reminded me I must ring and see where they are..

Some do, some dont, depends hw "freindly" the service reception guys look. Tend to find if nice to them, they dont mind having a quick look at things without charge, afterall, they may be getting a job out of it at the end of the day......

My dealer looked for nothing.,.,
Then quoted £600... I pointed out that cambelt service is only £450ish.. and they are changing less...
I then got a quote elsewhere for £300+VAT.. dealer then said they would do it for £300 dead..
Shocking what they will quote when not a standard service job..
imho of course.

Just read this thread. I have a 97Sport with same problem. Small amounts of oil in two places on bottom of cam belt cover. I cleaned them off and drove round town for a few miles-nothing.Then went for a run up motorway and oil came back. Car is in for oil-seal and cam-belt on TUE with my mechanic, but was told by another guy there could be a cause of a build up of oil pressure which has caused seal to go. Is he pulling wool over my eyes or is this a common fault on Flat-four Scoobs (Sport or Turbos). If so what is he going on about?!! Car has done just short of 80k and had full service at 75k and no problems then.
Greeno, hope you got yours sorted
Got quoted £200 to do seal/cam -belt/re-fill rad with proper coolant mix!

Well mines been in for a service and the oil leek has disapeared,
I think it must of been a bad seal on the Oil filter or summin...
Going in for a new rocker gasket next week so all the leaks should be sorted, got qouted £95 for parts and labour for it from a main dealer, i thought that was pretty good.
Cheers,
John.

PS pump leaks are pretty common as is the Front crank seal..
Most of the seals I have replaced do not leak from the inner running lip as you would expect. But the seal its self has a tendancy to work its way out of the front of the oil pump casting..
When we replace them, we apply a thin application of a silicon liquid gasket compound to the outer rim of the new seal.. Then Insert it into place.. This helps hold the seal in place..
There is no need to remove the Radiator to replace the seal.. But it is in a tight place mind you..
While you are at it, consider a new cam belt and have the belt tensioner piston checked for leaks.. If it is then have it replaced.. Also the Toothed idler pulley bearing has a tendancy of running rough.. Again consider replacement..

JGM can you point out in the service schedule where it says that dealers should change the oil seal on the second cambelt change as i can't recall ever seeing it.
As I said.. all okay all the time is on the service schedule..
Just seeing £££ again..
You reason for asking?
