Hi all,
i want get rid of the turbo lag between gear changes will a dump valve make a big difference or is it purely a cosmetic/sound nice mod!
Any suggestions on what type to go for?

Say what? If you own an Impreza, your car already has a dump valve fitted as standard.
You're correct in thinking the vast majority of aftermarket valves are more about cosmetics and noise than anything else.
There are some that will go some way to reducing pressure loss during gear changes if adjusted appropriately (i.e. they hardly open at all), but the downside of this is a reduction in turbo working life.
TBH the best way of eliminating boost loss during gearchanges is to eliminate the DV completely, although how long your turbo will last in this state is anyone's guess.

No Mart, the "removal" comment was not tongue in cheek, it is correct as it stands. Removing the DV completely will produce less lag than running with one - albeit, as stated, at the cost of turbo working life.
You are correct, my personal preference is to avoid modifications that unnecessarily prejudice the reliability of the engine. I was not advocating the removal of the DV, merely illustrating the realities of the situation to Bakes.

Are you talking about actual lag or changing too early and dropping the engine out of the boost window ?
My STi seems to have very little noticeable lag compared to my EVO. To feel for lag, close the throttle at about 5k rpm for about 5s then open it fully (try it down a hill so the revs don't drop). In the EVO you could feel a definite delay, in the STi, its much less noticeable.
Fit a better exhaust/cat to increase the boost window.
