I think your friend means the MY97/98's as these suffered from piston slap.... (no recall due to low numbers that did suffer).
60-80k on any car is nothing nowerdays, my monditto has 85k on the clock and runs like a dream but as long as the car has full service history and looks like its been pampered then it should be ok

Tony's words are bang on the money James, heed them well.

'98 model year cars seem to be the more prone to piston slap. If your budget will stretch to one, a tidy MY99 car is arguably the best of the older shape Imprezas. Better engine, suspension and brakes than the '98's, as well as cosmetic niceties like the crystal head and fog lights, and a better ECU and nicer looking wheels than the MY00's.

There are some specific things to look for as well as avoid, but as Tony says, if you're not experienced at spotting a good used Impreza from bad, a bog standard car with a full Subaru service history on a Subaru Proven warranty is difficult to go wrong with.

James,
I have a MY97 with 85k (which is for sale should you be inerested)and it's still going strong, no problem with piston slap, just keep up the servicing.
