Hi guys

Now i notice the my98 maf is in like a built in unit unlike my friends my00 which is mesh and can just be popped open and sprayed.
The one dealer told me the whole thing has to be replaced and it can't be cleaned ... is this true ??

by the way im running 0.6 bar boos cos i found anything above that gives me hesitation in 4th and 5th at 4500 rpms ... so i stopped doing that :>

thanks

If it is the same as on my MY97 it cannot be changed and it is a replaceable item however I sucessfully cleaned mine with carb cleaner I cleaned the gauze and the filament and personally had no problems.I removed the airbox cover and maf to clean it and fitted a new airfilter on re assembly.I also left it to dry out for 15 mins before I reassembled it.

No I took the top off the airbox with the MAF still inside. Mine gas 4 small phillips screws on the plate , but it didnt seem as if it wanted to come out. I sprayed the carb cleaner in from the filter end to clean the gauze and from the pipe end to clead the MAF sensor element which was a bit clogged up with oil/grime and when I had finished it looked like a small bulb element again rather than a black blob
I then had a coffee to allow the vapours to evaporate (trichlororethylene)before I re assembled it.
I'm no expert by any means but the info came from 2 days of reading posts on cleaning MAF ,MAP and boost solenoids , the concensus of opinion is that it may harm the engine spraying it in while its running from what I have read. Hope this helps you

Thumbs up

Cleaned mine with WD40 and wiped very gently with cotton wool buds.

You dont need to take the thing to bits, as said earlier 'it does not seem to want to come apart'

Just remove the whole plastic section that conatins the maf between the rubber pipes. You can just about reach the element with a cotton bud.
