Is this normal - metallic contraction noises when cooling down?
#1
Purchased my first Scoob a week ago (a MY01 UK300 with PPP) so don't know if this is normal or not. I get metallic contaction "creaking" noises from the wheel arches as the car is cooling down. With the engine off these seem to go on for minutes before settling down. This occurs after journeys of just a few miles, not just the longer runs. No problem with the temperature gauge - seems to settle properly below half way throughout all journeys. I've never noticed cooling noises to this extent in any other car I've had. Is it a Scooby thing or do I have a problem somewhere?

Wouldn't bother me if it was just over long journeys but I get it when I go just a few miles which is worrying me a bit as I'm not someone who is particularly heavy on the brakes the majority of the time. I hope you are right however and that it turns out to be a minor issue to do with the brakes.
Any other suggestions?

things like exhausts will get very hot, even after only a few miles, check out how quickly your water temp rises. Only takes about 2 miles. The creaking noises you are hearing are just metal part contracting. Very normal, and evident on most cars I have owned.

Emissions regulations apply from the moment the ignition key is turned, so an important factor in meeting emissions tests (regulatory tests, not MOT) is to get the catalysts up to working temperatures as soon as possible. So this is what engineers design exhausts systems to do, it doesn't take long, just a few miles.
I think SAAB (maybe Volvo ?) have a different system on one of their cars, they actually store exhaust fumes in a storage tank near the boot and only vent it to atmosphere, passing through the catalytic covertors a second time, once they are up to temperature.
Compare it with other scoobs of same year/model, if it's the same then just call it a design feature !

it takes longer than 2 minutes to get the temps to a point you can start to drive hard. Water temp takes a few minutes, oil temp takes 12-15 minutes to get to a safe temperature to start driving it hard.

In the good old days, a car that was "pinging" and being rather accoustic was a sign of a car that had been driven enthusiastically, officer!!!!
Now my scoob does it all the time, even when just popping out for a short journey!
No worries!
