Is my engine blown?

Last friday I went for my usual motorway test run after having my GEM ECU fitted.
I got into 5th gear for about 5-10secs when there was a noise ( can`t remember if it was a pop or bang!) the engine lights all came on and I just free wheeled onto the hard shoulder.
The engine will not start but will turn over with no clunking noises, there was no smoke coming from the exhaust after the engine died and no oil is lost as its still reading full on the dipstick.
one strange thing is when I did turn on just the ignition the day after(not turning the engine though) there was a loud pop out of the exhaust????? what could have caused this as the engine didn`t turn over???
Any ideas welcome.

"A loud pop without turning the engine over"
That's a strange one! My thoughts feel that it could be an electrical short. Was it a crack rather than a pop? Where did the noise come from? Was it very loud?

So then, it sounds like that was some fuel igniting when you turned the ignition on.
If the ECU is buggered, this could have caused the plug to spark igniting any fuel laying dormant in there.
Other than that I would be checking all the obvious things like compressions, checking you still have a cambelt etc (just remove the end cover which can be done with the radiator still in situ), try a different ecu.
Best of luck

I'd check the standard things like highlander has already said.
if it's thrown an engine light up - read the code out (presumably a GEMs will do that somehow!)
check cambelt, compression, oil for bits of metal etc etc...
how long has GEM's been fitted?
