93 WRX, did a 120 mile trip yesterday with no bother at all, no check lights etc etc. Tried to start it up today but the oil light stayed on for more than a second so I stopped it. Tried once more later, same result. Not keen on turning it on again!

I would normally suspect a sensor but the engine does sound very tappety which suggests there is a real problem. Theres plenty of oil in it and no evidence of leaks. Could it be possible for the oil pump to fail or for a blockage to develop? The oil was changed about 1000 miles ago with a new filter and Mobil 1 Motorsport and Ive never had any engine related problems.

Where is the pump, is it hard to access, is there anything else I should be considering, has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks in advance.

Andy

If it's stuck once, I'd never trust it again !

get yourself a Roger Clarke motorsport one, the one of choice, it would seem.

Certainly sounds like the relief valve, especially with the noisy tappets. Best not to drive it of course until you have checked the sensor.

If the releif valve ahs stuck, probablt better to replace the pump whilst you have it stripped down that far anyway, bit too dicey to risk cleaning out and refitting due to where it is on the engine and how time consuming to replace.
