I have recently fitted a 3" bore downpipe to my car and noticed that under hard acceleration I can hear a faint pinking like sound echoing down it higher up the rev range.Has anyone else experienced this or is it just wastegate flutter I am hearing.

I have too fitted a hks high flow down pipe and I have the same noise I took it to P.E to have the upgrade and heard it when it came back so I re-booked it in to have it checked out at the same time had a front mounted intercooler fitted it came back with the same noise p.e asured me it was not pinking so I assume the noise we hear must be something else.

Well it shouldn't be pinking, do you have a boost guage fitted ? If you have and its flutter then you should see the needle pulsing. These cars do "pulse" quite hard on boost. I had to fit two restrictors to steady out my boost guage on higher boost levels and can hear a distinct "chuffing" as opposed to pinking sound when it does. Its possible that this sort of thing is producing the noise that you mention. If so then it is indeed nothing to worry over. I eliminated it by advancing the timing up between 4000 and 5000 rpm, air spills back out of the turbo inlet causing turbulance and the noise, advancing the timing improved the air flow through the engine and stopped the spillage.

I think it may just be the heat shield of around the new downpipe rattling. I got this problem on my car as soon as I changed the downpipe (Kakimoto, japanes make).

The mechanic just 'bent' the shield back slightly with a screwdriver and it went away.

Does sound like a metalic rattling from the engine, possibly a bit like pinking.

Cool

Hi y'all

Just a quick suggestion.. Its what I suggest anyway..

When you fit any aftermarket downpipe, remove and dont use the heatshield. Lag the pipe instead...From the trubo back... to about a foot away from the flange.

Do this first before you fit it. It looks superb, keeps the heat down well, and doesnt rattle/pink.
