Hey guys/gals.

After doing a little research (not least on this bulletin-board), I have a couple of questions (well, five actually!), and an idea which I would like some feedback on.

Q1. Have any of you (and there must be some!) fitted MECHANICAL speed-delimiters to your Scooby's?

Q2. If you answered YES to Q1, have you ever looked inside?

Q3. If so, is it what I think it is - namely, a reduction-gearbox fitted in-line with the speedo/speedo-cable?

Q4. Are there any other modifications necessary when using these mechanical devices?

Q5. Would anybody out there be interested if I said that I think such a device could be made using off-the-shelf components (for example, from RS Components Ltd) much cheaper than buying the commercially available ones (which are circa £200 each)?

Come on folks!! Surely some of you out there have fitted a de-limmiter to your WRX. I just need to know what was involved and whats in the box. Surely it must just be a reducing gear box or am I missing something!!!!
A quick look through the RS componets sugests that the req gears etc should ony cost a few quid.

Greg..

The speed converters are a simple reduction gearbox.... that fits inline with the speedo cable... As the Doc has said.. they are about 70 quid...

RS is expensive.. but a good place to build a prototype from... :}

Mmmm. No way I`m paying 70 quid for 2 gears, 2 shafts and a box. I think I`ll build my own of tenner or so!

PS. Do you know where I can find a wiring diagram of the fuel pump so I can fit an imob?

Hi J,
The car is 95 WRX RA. Ive not tried to find the fuel pump wires yet though I will start to pull fuses some time this week no doubt.
Being a Jap motor I guess it will be trial and error.
However I am going to modify a pager (£30 from Argos) so that if the car ever gets nicked (by some low life scum ball) I will call the pager, and that will trigger a relay to cut the supply to the fuel pump or something simmilar.
Hey. At the same time as the fuel gets cut, I may also fire a 12" spike up the drivers seat!!

The only problem I can think of is that this could cause an accident if the robber were say pulling out from a junction ang the thing cut out, though hopefully they wont get too far!!

I've fitted adelimiter and new dials. You are quite correct in assuming that it is just a .6 ratio converter. I was gutted whan I paid £185 for the unit, it was delivered and it was only a tiny unit with gears in it. There are machining requirements to make it compatible (or are there?) I reckon this should be retailed at £20. It was a total git to install as well, involving removing the turbo intercooler unit and getting your arm right down to the gearbox. Maybe I should've fitted it behind the dash...

Greg,

The box is a simple 5/8ths reduction gearbox.
**
NOTE: I would pay for 4 gears and three shafts if I were you, otherwise your speedo will try to go backwards!

Hi Pilch>
Did the box that you bought simplty connect between the gear box and the speedo or did you have to cut the cable?

Moray, nice one about the number of gears req. It would have been some laugh if the speedo was going backwards!!LOL

I think I`ll put in a idler gear, as I cant see what effect 4 gears would make. If the box got a clokwise input then 4 gears give you the same. An idler gear will sort it out though.
Thanks anyway for the pointer.

I've been thinking too.

If I got an empty washing-up bottle, some sticky back plastic, a few milk bottle tops and some sticky tape, maybe I could build a cheap 22B?

Sorry, couldn't resist that

Nice thought David. Though the milk bottle tops would have to be gold.......
Mmmmm I dont mind paying for stuff though I do hate being ripped off and these limiters seem to be just that.

Greg,

All I had to do (!) was unplug the speedo cable from above the gearbox and insert the box between both ends. Very simple idea, but the security connectors are a real pain.

Er.. I think (therefore I am) that you require 3 gears in the box, not 4! 4 would reverse the direction of the cable, and strip the speedo. There is an anti-reverse mechanism in the speedo that stops the tachometer going backwards (otherwise we'd be laughing!)

Pilch,

4 Gears and three shafts would work fine and allow the box to keep the drive in-line.
Greg is right that you can use 3 gears using a central idler gear.

my layout: (brackets denote drive direction)

in-[ [-out
]-]

Gregs layout:

in -[
]
[-out

How would 4 gears in this layout not work then Pilch?

I bet the formatting goes pear shaped!

Greg,

Got mine from Speedy Cables (0171 226 9228). They cut the cable (about 8 inches from the gearbox end), the position of the cut is vital so as not to kink or expose to extreme heat, (Car is a V2 Sti MY96). They changed the speedo face from kph to mph (excellent job too) inc p+p £99 all in.
Works PERFECT would not try and build my own when fo a measly 100squid they do all the hard work and you spend an hour putting it in.its the sleep easy option as you dont want a 'check engine' light coming on..

Yup. My mate went the same route and I think he used Speedy Cables as well. I have desided to wait till the better weather comes and go for this option. The limmiter comes in at 6000 rpm in top so I cant see the thing going much faster given that the red line is at 7750 ish. Dont fancy running at thoes revs for too long though!!

Cheers
Greg
