Question

Does anyone know what is wrong when the 'check engine'light comes on in the instrument panel?
It started last night but the car seemed ok, and it kept going on and off so i thought it would be alright to use use today as long as i was gentle. But it isnt! i have an intermitent stutter when accelerating in all gears that seems to have no patern at all.
Got any ideas anyone?
My speedo stoped working 3 days ago do you think this has anything to do with it, as it seemed to cause no problem for the first couple of days.
Oh by the way it is an N reg STI 2.
Cheers.....JAMES

Had exactly the same thing; UK 97MY.

Vehicle Speed sensor failed - the symptom of this is speedo stops working.

However the ECU also gets a bit confused and can flash the check engine light.

I drove for about 3 weeks like this while the sensor was on order. No damage risk.....no need to worry....

This happened on my STI V when new, the speedo converter was incorrectly fitted next to a very hot part of the engine and so intermittantly packed up. The result was the Check Engine warning came on and the ECU ran in 'safe mode' and wouldn't go above 4K rpm. Most Check Engine errors can be easily diagnosed by a dealer.

Thumbs up

The engine goes into safe mode if the speedo cable breaks, change the speedo cable and the light will magically disappear.

Cool

I have only just joined this list, so you have probably had the problem fixed by now.

I had a similar problem. It turned out that the Anti knock sensor in the engine was faulty, casuing the check engine light to come on intermitantly. When the light is on the ECM automatically goes into safe mode. Bye Bye any performance. This is covered by warrenty, otherwise is costs about £250 to fix

Do you have any problems with your idle as well ?
If so then the problem might be the Air flow sensor.
Check it out....

I have almost got the problem sorted.
It was a broken speedo cable, im just waiting for a new one which should be here any day when customs let go of GGRs order from Japan!
The car has been fine to drive though, apart from always having to watch the rev counter and have extreamly quick gear changes!!!
chears.....JAMES
