But why were the 5 door WRX's less powerful than the saloons until 1998? Couldn't "estate" owners handle the extra power??!

Cool

Terry,

Bob Rawle has a five door - he seems to have fixed the problem of having less power

Thought the 5 door had the same bhp? - just less torque - and yes we all know that Bob Rawles car is rather a little bit faster than the average 5 door!

Rikki, be careful about quoted power outpus, as just about every WRX I have seen advertised says "280 bhp" fact is that the early ones don't.

Question

Can anybody help me? What are the standard output of variuous models? I thought that the standard output was 240BHP but I went to view one at the weekend and it was 208. Is 240 standard for the STi models?

Also, if I were to buy a bog standard 208 BHP: a) how easy is it to raise the power considerably?
b) by how much is possible?
c)is it dangerous for the engine? (eg new chip)

Any help greatly appreciated.

Rikki,

Oh yes. Get a 5 door WRX. EVERYBODY gets out the way.
Then they get REALLY miffed when an "estate" goes by.

Steve - no, the 5 doors were about 30bhp behind the saloons until 1998, as well as torque. But, unless anybody wants to contradict me, the difference isn't massive, unlike the UK to WRX step-up which i think is much more noticeable...

Don't expect to see 280bhp using 95 RON unleaded petrol either!

A point to note maybe, that the power figures mentioned here are PS not BHP, and are the Jap figures for 100RON fuel.

280PS = approx 276bhp, and then deduct a few more for 97RON fuel.

A 240PS WRX will probably be more like 230bhp in the UK.

Just me being pedantic, but you did ask about the power ratings....

Dave

PS. It has been known for some Jap manufacturers to choose poor ambient conditions (ie hot day) to rate their engine to keep it under the gentleman's agreement of 280PS. Thus a quoted power of 280PS could be closer to 300PS.

5-door WRX has always has less power than it's 4-door counterpart since day 1.
It has 220ps from MY93 to MY96, then 250ps from MY97 to MY98, it then dropped to 240ps from MY99 onwards. Compared to the 240-280ps the 4-door has when the MY progresses.

Clarence,

There's a step in your sequence missing - from late 96 to sep 97, the 5 doors are 240bhp. Mine's one of those. Unless i've been misinformed all this time...
Dunno about the 99 cars dropping back to 240 though - that's news to me.
Anyway, they're all fun at the end of the day...
