Noticed some grey 'sludge' in the pipe where I top up the water (cooling system). Any idea what it might be?

Sounds like it may be a bit of mixing of oil and water in the system, has the ol level started to alter, is there any increase in exhaust water vapour on fire up? [white smoke]..

Question

Has it ever had rad weld stuck in it ?
May have been used to block a small leak.

If it returns it will more than likley be your head gasket.
Watch your fluid levels like a hawk, you could end up causing a lot of internal damage, and that just equals a big bill .

If this sludge is in the expansion pipe by the battery its a case of they all do that .
I think that Subaru must use some sort of additive in their coolant as all Scoobs have this even brand new ones.It is not a sign of impending head gasket failure,in fact I have never seen a Subaru engine(current EJ series) ever sludge up with head gasket failure even the N/A stuff it always get blown out the exhaust.
If you look at the sludge closely you will find it has a slight green tinge to it,a blown/leaking headgasket looks like mayonaise but slightly darker.

agree with Steve Lawson as when i bought my car over a year ago i had the same, i cleaned it off and it never came back.. The guy who i bought the car off dealt in scoobys and he had about another 5-6 cars in and they were all the same.. Must just be crap deposits from the coolant..

thats a relief - although my mechanic mate (15 years experience albeit learnt from renault) says it sounds like oil contamination???
