Just bought my first Scooby,MY96 Turbo, only thing is its started to leak coolant from expantion tank/rad cap.Temp. reads half scale,OK.Its not boiling over the coolant just trickles past the cap especially at idle and on to exhuast.
Car was serviced as part of deal, only since then has it leaked. Its all abit embarasing pulling up at the lights in your long saved for pride and steam comes bellowing out of every orifice.
I have a cap on order(mon) Any other ideas guys.

Hopefully it is just your cap not holding the pressure...

Worst case is a head gasket gone or a crack..

The same thing happened to me . 90% chance you've a cylinder head gasket gone . If so a quick temporary solution is to remove the thermostat . Changing the gaskets is a major job involving a full days labour as you've 2 heads to do . Make sure the mechanic knows what he's doing as it is quite a difficult job .

Thanks guys, I hope it's not the head.
How much did it cost you and who did it Subaru/Local garage?
How many miles had it done? Mine's only got 62K. I thought these engines were pretty bullet proof.120K with ease.
Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted.

A mate who is a scooby mechanic done it at home for me and charged £100 for labour . I think the gaskets were £60 for the two . It is a good idea to get a set of exhaust manifold gaskets ( £10 I think ) as they usually break up when you remove the manifolds to take off the head . See if you can get them on a use or return basis .

If its the head gasket...

Its a full engine out job...you will need to check the surfaces arent warped...and need to check the bores for cracks too

Get some metal head gaskets.. about 90 quid for the pair.

You will need inlet manifold gaskets... exhaust manifold gaskets.. both turbo gaskets

You will need a new timing belt (especially at that mileage) I would never re-use one (but thats me)

Should take about a day...

Yep,just the cap £16. Thank GOD. Subaru recon 4.5 hours per head @ £45 p/h + gasket £190. So after that relief I celebrated with a good deal on some ex-P1 delivery wheels (gold six spoke Speedlines) got to be better than standard turbo alloys.
So shouuld be up for Box hill on 3th Feb. Anyone coming up the A24 past Horsham?

IMHO
Not wishing to Pi$$ on you bonfire - get the cooling system checked by your local car rad specialist - they will pressure test the system for you. Yes, i know it looks like it might just be the cap but it could have failed because of a more serious fault.

You say you have just brought the car - Maybe the previous owner knew something you did not!

I hope that i am wrong and it is the cap but best get it done before it gets worse and dumps the coolant in the oil or vise versa.

Could be a problem with the rad - i had a rad block with silt which caused the head to go on a Toyota many moons ago.

Hope this helps and it is not more serious than a rad cap
