I think the things you may need (imho) are:

Exhaust of some description with decat downpipe and I think an air filter may help.

I've also been told that flames also depend on how rich the car is running, too lean and no flames etc.

Harj's 22B did it the other night when I was behind him... very cool

 

Is it possible to get flames / pops / bangs from a sti type r. If so how can it be done,

Yes get a straight through exhaust and then get a MoTeC ecu fitted with anti-lag and launch controll . I allmost cought my mates 206 on fire the other day using the launch controllaway from some traffic lights
