Question

er... NO.. When I brought mine back it did really well (The only time I've done 70-80 jk). is it a uk one or an import? May get slapped for this but it could be the ecu. Mine seems to do ok when I'm w8in for the ppl infront to move over or on the comutes to work.
What model? is it 5dr? (prepares to be flamed) coz there less areodynamic and therefor will drink a little more on the motorway.
I suppose the biggest factor will be your right foot though .

Advice pleez,
Recently done my first long motorway run in my MY97 Scooby,Speed between 70 - 80 mph, revs 3000 - 3500 RPM, to my horror i found it was using about a third more fuel than when thrashing around on B roads, is this normal.
Thanx STU

ER no again. Managed to get 30-31mpg on a long motorway journey - 350 miles - by taking it easy (same revs as you)so something's wrong I guess.

Did a 150 mile trip on motorways on Saturday at a maximum of 4000rpm (including accelerating) and got through just under half a tank. Usually if I use the whole rev range on motorways or other roads I get around 200 miles to a tank!

I get the best consumption on motorway journeys. Goes up to over 300 miles to a tank (UK MY00). I find the engine is at its most efficient when the turbo is just slightly spinning, around the 3000rpm mark.

Something sounds amiss, unless you're one of those drivers whose motorway driving consists of "accelerate brake accelerate brake accelerate brake ..."!

Thumbs up

huet564,

I normally get around 31.4 MPG on the motorway, 80 to 90 mph with air conditioning on. I don't thrash the pants off her though. But try and keep a constant speed and light to medium acceleration.

Full tank around 330 miles.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Phill C

If I thrash her could be as low as 180 miles around town.

MY00 UK four door, Scooby back box and ITG filter.

It appears to be very car dependant, I have never managed a long journey at that speed my best ever was 6 hours at 56 (or very close to) on the clock which gave me 29mpg over 338 miles, this only happened once, and is never likely to ever happen again.

I normally get 15-18 over a tank - MY00.

Thanx guys,
Me thinks something is wrong.

The results i get from my 4 door scoob are approx 20 - 22 mpg around town (occasional thrash), motorway run approx 16 - 17 mpg (constant pace)

Think i'll get it checked

Thanx again

31mpg?!?!?

Most I've managed is 26mpg, and that was religiously changing up at 2500rpm and sticking to 65 on the motorway. And no I don't accellerate > brake etc like the vectra crew.

So will I get more mpg by keeping at 75-80 when the turbo's trying to spin?
I can't understand how it'll use less gas at 90mph than at 65.

Didn't even get 180 miles out of your tyres. LOL at them.

My 5dr MY97 does about 230 miles local on normal unleaded and thats with me driving it ( I also have an ITG panel filter and a Scooby Sport backbox. )

Depending on what MY you have the ecu is more adaptive to your driving, ie if you rag the @rse off your car all the time you aint going to get good mpg
Saying that i do rag my car occasionally and i still get good mpg (over 30mpg on the motorway!! ) it must be that prodrive chip i suppose

Mine's a MY00 UK 4-door, no mods. Driving usually consists of 20 miles each way to work down the motorway, with not many opportunities to give it some welly. Running it on normal UL, if that makes any difference.

I'm driving down to london this w/e y'see, so it'll be a good opportunity to put all this '30mpg' malarkey to the test. Personally I can't see it happening, not without some form of witchcraft or divine intervention anyhow...

Whip, turbos don't just increase performance, they can also increase fuel-efficiency.

Compare the 1.9 diesel & turbo-diesel engines in the Volkswagen Golf. The TDi 130 produces nearly twice the horsepower of the SDi (130bhp vs 70bhp), yet the fuel consumption figures are almost identical (39.8 mpg vs 40.4 mpg urban).

The Impreza turbo engine is designed to run turbocharged, so you're not getting the best out of it if you run below the speed where turbo starts to be effective. Sucking more air into the cylinders will make each combustion stroke more effective (up to the point that you start needing more fuel to keep up! )

Plus, if you don't put a bit of heat into the engine on a regular basis, you'll fill it up with carbon deposits which won't help your consumption either.

I'll leave the proper technical explanation to the experts!

You will be needing to replace the lambda sensor most likely, if that is producing a low or non exisatant voltage then the ecu will be trying to fuel to compensate and it will be running very rich indeed.

Cool

>>>>>>>>>>Gets better fuel consumption with SUL than UL
It may seem more expensive but it works out cheaper for the extra 50ish miles you can get out of the car

Super Unleaded, air-con on fairly chill, 80-90 on motorways I get about 330 miles off a full tank.

MY00, no mod.s

[Edited to say that I'd have to be fairly brave to get 330 out of it - the light comes on at about 280, but re-filling shows there's about 10 litres left].

I get about 220 out of a tank of UL, 250 SUL for same journey (mainly motorway 'speeds').

Drops to less than 180 around town. Never doen a whole tank on B roads but I guess around 15mpg is the best you'll see.

Having said that the tank is only 50 litres and there's always 4 left even when the dial is through the thick white bit - MY97 5 door by the way.

I think it's only a 50 litre tank...is it bigger from 98?

NickP: Which light is that then?

Seriously, I have a MY00 UK car and have never seen the light come on even when I've been able to put 55 litres into the tank.

Last time I checked I got 26mpg, on a mixture of urban crawl and motorways. Managed 31mpg during the fuel crisis. I have the PPP and run exclusively on Super.

Andy.

Had nearly 400miles out of a tank of fuel! but that was when i was running her in PPP increases fuel economy believe it or not but so does sul 30mpg on the motorway is very possible no matter how hard you rag your car she still gives you that and we talking 80+mph here too as for driving like a *****..... give me those a/b roads and watch my dust
