MY93 front crank oil seal gone again! Fitted new one with engine rebuild 3,000 miles ago, fitted new one when front crank pulley let go 700 miles ago, and now its gone again! I know the other times it was not the cause of the problem however there must be something I'm doing wrong for this one to go.
Fitting instructions please with any little tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated.
Its not pissing out, just an annoying drip ( sounds like someone I know ) and of course its dripping onto the drivers side exhaust header so when stationary a puff of smoke comes up out of the vent.

Cheers

We always "bond" the new seal in place with a silicon based gasket paste.. It stops it from moving and falling out..

have U checked the seal running face on the crank isnt scored and so damaging the lip?

Don't leave it dry after assembly otherwise the friction will damage the seal. Always smear the crank and seal with clean engine oil.

However, a leaking crank seal does not normally drip ono the exhaust header. Are you sure the leak is not coming from the cam cover?

Thanks guys I have always used engine oil smeared on it to get it seated, however the sealant will be a good thing. I thought it was a bit dodgy that the seal could move forward as there is nothing stopping it.
Graham you will find that the crank oil leaks out and runs along the bottom of the cam cover, dripping onto the header, it also goes the other way falling onto the shroud under the bottom radiator hoes, which obviously does not get hot so doesnt burn off.

Thanks again

Whilst you have it that far stripped down [again!], ever thought of dropping the oil pump off and cheacking it was not the sealant that holds the pump on thats actually failed. This can ventually fail and cause a leak as well. afterall, its only a smear of sealant and not a gasket, maybe worth doing..

Heath Robinson method.. clean the oil off the cam cover and then put a bead of silicon sealer on the cam cover so the oil runs to the passenger side only

Joking.. they are a pain in the *** to change and I hope you sort it.

JGM That is a good idea at least then I wont have that awful burnt oil smell.
I did take the oil pump off last time to check, but will also do so again.

Thanks guys at least it isn't just me who has these problems.
