overboost after scoobyecu fited
#1
first time today ive really give the car a run after having a soobachip fitted and i thought id blown the engine on the way home. gunning it at around 70ish put my fut down then thump what ive now been reliably informed is overboost.i thought i was running out of petrol. it happened three or four times on the way home . has anyone had this happen 2 them after fitting a scooba chip???

Check the bottom hose from the boost control solenoid that feed back into the air intake expansion box.
Check if it is still there and still has the brass restrictor in it.
It wouldn't be the first time that one of these would be missing.
If it is there the quickest way to fix it would be to replace the restrictor with one with a slightley smaller bleed hole.
If it isn't there then fit one.

Can you belive that a specialist removed this restrictor I had the car booked it in to have the boost soleniod changed and hoses replaced with silicon.
Since removal car's been a bit of a pig, especialy when it's cold. I confronted thier technical adviser at the open day and he was adament that there sould be no restrictor
cars a 95rex with stock ecu (240) best refit bottom hose with restrictor i guess?
Thanks, Roy.

Those that think they know somtimes don't.
Both pre96 and post 96 have restrictors.
But they are in different pipes and infact work in reverse.
On a Pre96 it is in the bottom hose from the solenoid which connect to the intake expansion box.
A small hole will reduce boost a big hole will increase boost.
On a Post96 is is in the hose between the turbo outlet and the t-piece which connect to the actuator.
A small hole increases boost a big hole reduces boost.
Sometimes these profesionals get confused

Thanks for clearing that up Scott, the worst thing is, i was 90% sure it was supposed to be there.
I phoned up said specialist, and i get him ranting down the phone at me, "i've worked in F1, been mapping cars for ages..." it goes on, and on! i'm like .... yeah, what ever! (he won't be told) the classic line was "they do it as a hobby, i do it for a living!"
(reffering to the people involved with ScoobyECU)
They won't be seeing any off my money in future.

Scott, i'm down to run at G-Force later this month, and would like to show a small improvement over last year (only boosted to .6 bar, hot day mind) oviously i'll be after a ScoobyECU eventualy, but it's not going to happen, for a couple of reasons
1. i'm skint after crimbo (+possibly being made redundant)
2. wouldn't expect you (or any follow ScoobyECU) to supply chip within a couple of weeks.
But since reffiting restrictor, and car's back to normal boost would it be worth playing arrond with a couple of restrictors to increase boost slightly, i'm thinking .95 bar if the stock ECU could keep up??
Thanks, Roy

what year is the car ? as it depends where the fuel cut is set.
92-94 are set at about 14psi (stock boost of 11.47psi)
94-96 are set at about 15.6psi (stock boost of 12.7psi)
IIRC...
Oops forgot to say that.....
Adjusting the hole size will only increase the 'Peak' boost rather then the 'Held' boost. Because the ECU will adjust the duty to pull the boost back down to the Map settings.
The only way round this would be ScoobyECU or and FCD to fool the ECU (then use the actuator adjustment to increase boost) or to bypass the Solenoid with a Dawes or Bleed Valve.

Scott, manufactured 94 (240 wrx according to Sidc faq)
Milo, would like to name and shame, but i don't think that would be beneficial, they do a lot of good things, but always seem to rub me up the wrong way! they're not realy into mapping early cars unless your going to splash out 2k+ on a Motec. (but i think you'd need your head testing first )

Scott, just been out and had a look at the ECU, it's a 2C.
What's the current situation with ScoobyECU's?? I've just found out that Banzai magazine will be at the RR day on the 24th.....
Roy.

Not resonator...restrictor.
On the drivers side suspension strut you will find the boost control solenoid. This is a brass looking thing with a connector and 3 hoses attached to it.
The top hose fits via a 90 degree bend. The middle hose goes straight into the side and the bottom hose comes straight out the bottom.
The bottom hose will then bend at 90 degrees and attach to a nipple on the air intake expansion box.
In this 90 degree hose there should be a small brass restrictor.
Have a look down either end and you should see it. I think the hole in the restrictor is about 1.5mm (not sure tho').
It has been known for these hoses to be removed as an attempt to gain more boost. Check your hose is there and if the restrictor is still in it.
If it isn't then thats the problem.
If it is, fit another restrictor with a 'SMALLER' hole. You can either make one yourself or buy them from Subaru for a few pence. But F'knows what you would ask for or how you would get the plumb on the parts desk to understand.

Is that the restrictor for pre or post 96. as they have different functions and locations ?
If they are the correct ones, I would suggest a 0.8 and see how it goes. If you loose boost drill it to 1.0mm or 1.5mm.
just have a play....

mines got no restricter in pipe and no ecu upograde and no adjustable boost and i get 17 psi , runs sweet (HOW?)
If u bypass soli where does pipe go ?
From actuater to adj boost to ??? , and where does the pipe from soli go now ?? cos surely if it goes in other side of adj boost (ITS NOT BYPASSING IT) (sorry if it's stupid Q Scott
