My head is currently a mess.

Since breaking down on Friday night the car has been sat in the drive.

The Symptoms

When you turn the key the fuel pump primes itself, the car starts but after a short period cuts out, although you need to keep you foot on the accelerator to keep it going.

Then sometimes the fuel pump doesn't prime and nothing, the car tries to start but just keeps turning over.

When the car is actually running the engine sounds fine, no problems, knocks our rattles.

I have just fitted this evening a new FSE Fuel Pump to see if this cured it, but to no avail.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS????????

Cheers in advance

Andy

The car is a 98 V5 Type R

There was a new filter with the pump, and had the fuel hose from after the bonnet filter and lets just say it pumps rather well!

Its like something is telling the fuel pump to shut off!

cheers

good idea!!!!

Think I will try that tommorrow, although how?

Is that safe?

Then if that works, what would be the problem? A relay????

Is the relay, two of the fuses under the steering wheel?

could be a throttle position sensor gone... The pump doesn't always prime on mine if you have switched off and straight back on for some reason either but always starts...

The ignition has to be completely off for at about 5 seconds before the pump will run when the ignition is swtiched back on.

Sounds like the scooby immobilser not de-activating (the one built in to the key). That is if it has one . If so, make sure you haven't got two car keys on the same keyring, or a magnet.

Other possibility may be a crank position sensor fault not telling the ECU it's running and thus shutting off the fuel pump just after you stopped cranking (and thus stalling the engine).

Hi,

It could also be the MAF, like a friends WRX STi my03. His car wouldn't start if you didn't press the accelerator...and no idle at all. Are you able to get someone to "select monitor" och "delta dash" it?

/M

Just disconnect the MAF & see if that helps.
You could also try disconnecting the lambda as this comes into things as well.
Or... your temperature sensor could be knackered, ie it thinks the engine is hot.
Easiest place to start is with the sensors, though (if you unplug them, the ECU then 'guesses' what they should be doing & hence it should give an improvement if the sensor is feeding duff info).

I have a MAF sensor coming today thanks to Grade A Subaru, my dad is on his way to pick it up for me.

What effect would the temp sensor do? Come to think of it the I/C Spray kept coming on!!!!!
