Default Mounting knock sensor?

I've just fitted my knock link. I've mounted the knock sensor on the inlet manifold about 2 inches above one of the cylinders as pictured below.

I've got it turned up to max sensivity and giving the car full bananas I can get the very bottom green light to go brighter. If I tap the intercooler mounting to the right (the metal plate with the 2 bolts) then all the lights on the knock link light up. Though I cannot get them to light up tapping the manifold or the top of the cylinder head. (Space is very restricted by the cylinder head, so I cannot tap it very hard)

Is this ok? Or should i move it someplace else?

Fitted mine underneath the intercooler by removing an existing bolt and fitting the sensor in its place using a longer M8 bolt.
Mine lights up like a christmas tree if i hit the top of the engine with a spanner and just the first led and second flickers at high revs on max sensitivity.

As i8gtmf says, under the intercooler on the block is the best place to fit it as per pic.

I kinda looked down there, but it looked like we'd be mounted into the gear box then? Wouldn't this be worse as it'd be picking up loads of clonking from the gears?

Anyone know the whereabouts of the ECU's knock sensor, as obviously a similar place to this would be on the money?

Most tuners recommend that the best position for the sensor is as shown in the pic. Bob Rawle who supplies the Knocklinks also recommends the same location. Sensitivity on the monitor is to be set on Max. I don't think there is another location on the block where you could mount it. Plus it's before the gearbox. Not on it.

Cheers,

George.

Thumbs up

Cheers George, that's good enough for me.

Originally that woz where I woz going to stick it anyways, but then I spotted this fab easy to get at 'ole on the side of the manifold.

It did all look too good to be true.

If your car is >MY01 WRX there is no free bolt as George's picture for mounting the sensor, sorry but this picture refers to <MY00 cars!
I searched (if you remember George!) on a MY03 WRX engine and is quite difficult to find a place similar to the above for the sensor as new age cars have the factory sensor in this bolt mounted!
I wonder what Bob and other profs suggest - if they read this thread - as it must be fitted directly on the block not on inlet or I/C etc.

T'is ok, I've moved it now, there's a bolt on the block under the IC that I've mounted it on. (She's an MY99)

I got mine from B R Developments, it was £85 for the link and £65 for the sensor.

Jim I have the same question. I just had my IC off and there doesnt appear to be any place that looks reasonable to mount it. As you say the photo shows a mount point that is already taken by the one Subaru fit on the new age cars. There is another spot on the other side under the throttle body that looks about right but I am not sure where that bolt leads Does anyone know if it would be possible to replace the OEM one with the Bosch sensor and hook up the knock link lights to it as well?

Jim ,
I remember, but Zhastaph's picture was working earlier and I saw that it was a MY99/00 engine bay.

Swaussie could you ask Bob (I guess you bought yours from him) about this and tell us what he recommends?

I don't think removing the OEM knock sensor is a good idea...!

On some very good advice I left the OEM sensor where it was and never touched it. I wasnt actually going to remove it just replace it with a better one from Bosch As for fitting the new sensor to a STi 02, I put mine under the Intercooler and a little behind and higher than the original sensor. There are four holes with some number stamped behind them and there is a fifth hole with thread. I Mounted it there.

I am not going to say this is the definitive place to fit the second sensor for the knock link but dowser confirmed last night it was working OK.

I hope my WRX03 has the same holes where I could fit my KL sensor otherwise it's quite difficult to find a proper thread on the block!

On my 03STi there is an M8 tapped hole under the IC on the battery side of the engine, and you can fit the sensor without removing the IC

John you have right this is the place where I fitted mine last night along with other mods. There are 4 holes, one of them M8 type (not tapped on mine) you just need a proper bolt!
Sorry I have no digital camera (yet)...

Madgrips photo is the one, and as I say, you don't need to disturb the IC

not too sure john. I did remove the IC to let me get access, would've been too difficult otherwise

Bolted mine on, no probs. without disturbing anything (03STi) You can shine a torch between the IC and the manifold from the front and view whilst fitting the sensor with your right hand under the IC from the side. (Bandages come off in a fortnight)
